Forces in Action

Over the past few weeks, the Year 3s have been learning about Forces. They understand that a force is a push or a pull. The students know that to make things move, change their speed, direction or shape, a force must be applied.

To investigate forces further, we spent some time in the playground playing with equipment such as balls, skipping ropes and bows arrows. Through this hands-on approach, students successfully identified forces acting on objects.

The slide in our primary playground presented an opportunity for students to explore gravity. The children soon understood that gravity helps pull them down the slide and that gravity is all around us. Without gravity, everything on Earth would fly off into space!

Whilst playing on the slide, the class also discovered friction. We learnt that whenever objects rub against each other, friction is created. Friction works against the motion and acts in the opposite direction to the movement of an object. To test if different surfaces create different amounts of friction, the children carried out an investigation. For this investigation, we placed cars on ramps with different surfaces and then gradually raised the ramps gradually until the car started moving. The following surfaces were tested:

  • Carpet
  • Foil
  • Wooden
  • Rubber
  • Sandpaper

From our observations, the classe concluded that the surface that created the most friction was the carpet, as the ramp was raised to 11cm before the car started moving down the ramp. The surface with the least friction was foil. Based on these results, it was  agreed that rough surfaces create the greatest amount of friction.
