News for 8th January 2015

08 January 2015

Message for our Principal Welcome back. I hope that your break was, peaceful, quiet, loud, exciting, busy or restful to your taste! I also hope that your children have come back refreshed and ready to continue with the hard work.

The reports that have just been issued form a good starting point for families to discuss their children's academic and social progress. They are meant to form a framework for the forthcoming parents evening discussions as well as serve as a record and reminder for parents to discuss the work of their children in the family setting.

Teamwork is often spoken about in education; this is because when done well it has a direct effect on the wellbeing and indeed outcomes for students which is, after all, our reason for being. The most important teamwork is that between home and school.

On another note I would like to encourage all parents to check the parent portal regularly. It is the "official" source of news and information for NAS. The Facebook page is more of a "diary" with some reminders and the schools webpage is a source of record and information mostly for new or prospective families.

I would also like to take a moment to reiterate our requirements for safe driving around the school. Unfortunately I had to remove one family from the school just before the Christmas break due to repeated (twice) safety issues. I do not take such actions lightly as of course it effects the child of the person concerned, none the less even after having been spoken to directly this person continued to drive in a manner that required further action.

Not wanting to end on a somewhat unfortunate note…the floodlights are finally here and the pool heater is also upgraded!

All the best

Michael Embley

Message from our Head of Primary

Welcome back to school!  I hope you all had a restful holiday.  It was lovely to see so many familiar faces returning to NAS Dubai this week for Term 2 and I was especially pleased to note how happy many of the children were to return.   In addition, I am so pleased to welcome all our new families.  The new children have settled straight into our routines and I hope they have been telling you all about their first week.

As you know, this week in primary we were busy preparing reports for all children in the school.  I hope that these reports feel like a true reflection of your child’s progress and achievements and that you find them informative.  You are no doubt aware that parents evenings are being held on Sunday and Monday next week and I very much look forward to welcoming ‘old’ and ‘new’ families into school to discuss your child’s progress with their teacher.  Have a lovely weekend!

Message from our Head of Secondary

Welcome back to a new term and happy New Year. As you know the theme of the week has been new beginnings. This has coincided with you receiving your child's report. The reports are a delight to read and I know our teachers are looking forward to meeting you at our parents evenings on the 11th and 18th January where we can discuss the new academic and personal challenges for your child in 2015.

Parent Association News

On behalf of the NAS PA we would like to welcome our new families and all our returning ones.  We had a great first day coffee morning.  We will be looking to run a regular coffee morning with a theme so please watch the PA section on the portal for updates.

With the success of the 2 major PA events last term we have some exciting ones planned for the rest of the year including a movie night, family fun day and PA ball!

To keep the momentum going we are now ‘Calling all Class Representatives’.  I would like to invite anyone who volunteered through their class teacher last term or would like to find out a little more about the role to come to a class rep meeting on Tuesday at 8am in the secondary library on the 2nd floor.  The role can be undertaken by more than 1 person and in many situations this works very well.  If you attend the meeting there is no commitment to take on the position.

The next PA meeting will take place on Monday 2nd February at 8am.

I look forward to meeting many you over the next few weeks.

Bekky Britton

Head of the PA

Charity Drive

Following instruction from the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to construct an air bridge to supply refugees with supplies, Dubai Cares is supporting the “UAE Compassion” (Tarahamu) campaign. As part of the initiative they are appealing to schools to donate blankets, warm clothes and food items.

NAS Dubai is proud to support this campaign alongside the KHDA. If families wish to donate any of the items listed above please drop them into the first floor administration on Sunday 11th January and Monday 12th January. The items will then be delivered to Dubai Cares on Tuesday 13thJanuary. The campaign is only running for 7 days therefore the drop off area will
not receive any items after 3pm on Monday.
