Windermere Prep Lower School continues to believe that supporting our student's social and emotional development needs is the foundation of all academic success. To that end, we will be entering our third year in providing exposure to our students and teachers in the development of mindfulness practices. The past two years we have had outside providers work with both students and teachers.  Many of our teachers have now incorporated time for mindfulness in the daily classroom routine, helping students to learn how to be more self-aware, and present. Developing these skills helps students to manage their emotions, focus their attention, empathize and connect with others, and resolve conflicts peacefully. This year, our mindfulness sessions will be led by our lovely Lower School Administrative Assistant Maria Oliveira, Ed.S.  Mrs. Oliveira has trained as a Meditation Instructor at the Deepak Chopra Center in California. This summer, she immersed herself in the Peace of Mind Program.  Peace of Mind is a program specifically designed for lower school students to understand the concept of mindfulness and develop the foundation for mindfulness practice.  This program aligns beautifully with our Social/Emotional and Character Development Programs. Mrs. Oliveira will be working with all grade levels in four-week increments. I would encourage you to engage your children in conversations about their experiences in these sessions and discuss how you may be able to incorporate these skills into your family life. Please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any questions or concerns.  You can reach Mrs. Oliveira at Maria.Oliveira@windermereprep.com or Nancie Byrnes at Nancie.Byrnes@windermereprep.com.
