Student Spotlights

Village's innovative Internship Program provides students with hands-on opportunities throughout the school year to gain valuable real-world experience under the expert guidance of practicing professionals in a wide range of fields. Check out what our students have been up to this summer through our Internship Program!

Puneetha- Internship
Puneetha - MD Anderson Cancer Center

Passionate about ending teen tobacco use, senior Puneetha G. was accepted into UT MD Anderson Cancer Center’s 2019 Summer Experience Program. During this 10-week program, Puneetha worked on a cancer prevention team studying nicotine addiction in children and the effects this chemical has on brain development. “Working under the mentorship of Dr. Alexander Prokhorov and other highly educated employees in this world-renowned cancer center has truly opened my eyes to a new side of science,” she marvels. “The highlights of my summer included having my very own comic book published for use by MD Anderson’s Behavioral Science Department as well as the opportunity to present my findings through a science poster at the Summer Experience Final Event Poster Session, presenting along nearly 250 other high school, undergraduate and graduate students. I was also one of ten finalists in the Elevator Speech Competition, where I gave a 90-second speech to local medical professionals on the work I conducted during the summer.” Puneetha recognizes the impact of this internship, reflecting “Through working alongside leaders in science, my internship further motivated me to pursue a career in medicine and research.”

Roberto- Internship
Roberto - Houston Mechatronics

How would you like to spend your summer working on an underwater transforming robot? For Roberto M., this dream was his reality while interning at Houston Mechatronics, working on their underwater robot Aquanaut. He explains what drew him in saying, “I wanted to be in a professional engineering environment, working on a team and learning crucial industry skills like CAD.” Roberto’s day-to-day held a lot of responsibility, “I often worked independently to find solutions for issues the project was facing- this meant designing parts in CAD, and 3D-printing  them to test their effectiveness.” Impressed with his work ethic, his mentor Kyle remarked, “Roberto fits in really well with our mechanical engineering department and functions just like any other team member.” Roberto appreciates all he learned, relaying “I gained first-hand experience in an industry I’ve always been interested in.”

Hajra- Internship
Hajra - Danny Nguyen Couture

Fashionista and entrepreneur Hajra A. remembers beginning her internship with designer Danny Nguyen, “I started in the fall of my junior year, and he took me in with no experience- I knew nothing!” As the internship progressed, Hajra found she could not get enough. In the Entrepreneurship Diploma Program, Hajra was able to weave her passions into presentations, projects and even her capstone project, developing an online customizable clothing business. This love for fashion was evident throughout her internship as well, as Hajra recounts going to every event she could. Danny Nguyen took notice of her work ethic and invited Hajra to attend Paris Fashion Week and help work his shows. Hajra couldn’t believe it, “I’m just so stunned- If you had told me in 9th grade I’d be going to Paris, I never would’ve believed you! That’s why I love the Entrepreneurship Diploma Program- it helped me figure out who I want to become. I walked into my first internship not knowing anything and now I’m going to Paris Fashion Week!” With direction and a confidence in her ability, Hajra is looking beyond her upcoming trip to what is next, “I’m looking for a university that not only has an appreciation for art, but also an entrepreneurial spirit.”

Sharan MITE Signpost
Sharan - Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education

Sharan S. has always loved biology and medicine and he knew he wanted to gain hands-on experience when he entered high school. As a tenth-grader, Sharan participated in the Summer Internship at the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (M.I.T.I.E). He completed 215 hours working alongside surgical technicians, helping set up, clean and take down the lab, and even suturing up cadavers on occasion. The internship gave him valuable experience and a clear perspective. As a senior, Sharan was accepted into a highly competitive Dual B.S./D.O. Program at Nova Southeastern University, and was awarded the Razor’s Edge Research Scholarship. All of his hard work and the experience he gained through his internship has shaped his path and led to his next opportunity in life, “I discovered my passion through this internship and in 7 years, I’ll be able to practice medicine!”

Olivia- Internship
Olivia - Pheramor

Olivia B.’s interests range from programming and technology to marketing and business. The summer after her 10th grade  year, Olivia interned in marketing at Pheramor, a company that combines artificial intelligence with genetic testing to match compatible users on an application. As she was learning all about marketing and technology, Olivia was developing a speech-coaching application that she and a group of Vikings entered in The Conrad Challenge, a STEM and entrepreneurship competition. The group won first place and Olivia credits her summer internship for knowing how to professionally market their product, “I worked to make our app unique to competitors, using skills I’d developed at Pheramor. My internship opened more doors than I ever would have thought. In winning The Conrad Challenge, we were awarded scholarships, flown to a tech conference, featured on a podcast and given the opportunity to develop our app further. What I learned in my internship was paramount to how we pitched our product.”
