A Virtual Reading Corner for Grade 1

It’s hard to beat curling up with a good book, but what happens when visiting the library is no longer an option?

Our Grade 1 Reading Corner offered a virtual solution to this problem, allowing students the opportunity to explore different books tailored to their learning. The virtual reading corner was born from the need for a virtual library or reading nook that kids could explore and learn from as they would in school. This engaging online tool not only covers students’ Unit of Inquiries, it also gives them a fun way to practice reading.

Books were selected for the Reading Corner in two different ways: either our Primary School Librarian, Ms. Colleen, recommended them or they were chosen by Grade 1 teachers for the ways in which they relate to the current unit and its lines of inquiry. Students have enjoyed the opportunity to choose and explore these stories:

Grade 2 Makerspace Encourages Hands-On Learning

Another excellent example of virtual learning has been the Virtual Makerspace, which engages Grade 2 students in hands-on activities. Inspired by the Grade 1 Virtual Reading Corner, Grade 2 teachers used a similar format to share hands-on activities with students. While exploring the Makerspace, learners discover different materials and crafts that they can make out of them.

Their current unit is an inquiry into Sharing the Planet and the responsibilities humans have to protect the Earth’s resources. As one of the lines of inquiry focuses on The Three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) and taking action, the Grade 2 teachers wanted to provide students with a range of choices in which they could find new uses for different materials.

Grade 3 Students Create Songs for a Special Cause

As part of their unit inquiring into the exchange of goods and services, G3 students have written lyrics and recorded songs for different family members, friends and teachers. Students' recordings of these special songs are on sale for €1 each, and all of the proceeds will go to UNICEF.

In addition to writing lyrics, students also made posters to announce the sale of their songs. These were put together into a video trailer, which was then distributed to the community. Check out some of their amazing posters!

All of these projects in Grades 1, 2 and 3 have helped us stay connected during this time at home. Collaborating via digital formats and virtual learning tools have given us new ways to work together and explore our world!
