Dear BSKL Secondary,
Although expected, the news of school closure is of course disappointing to us. However, I am very confident that our staff will be able to deliver quality learning and teaching, and continue the exceptional academic provision and pastoral care, albeit virtually.
We will be aiming to share daily updates with the community. Today’s is rather lengthy:
External Examinations (i/GCSE and A-Level)
Currently, the UK examinations Boards are clear that these will go ahead as scheduled. We will monitor the situation carefully and keep you updated. We have shared the following key documents with you:
Internal Exams Years 7-10
I have also made the decision that our internal exams, as currently scheduled and planned, cannot go ahead as planned and will be postponed. I do think that this is the wrong time to burden young people with the stress of internal examinations. We will review this in Term 3, once we are hopefully back in school.
Clearly, we will have to cancel this year’s production, or at least postpone. I do this with sadness - I know how hard everyone has worked. I am very sorry for everyone involved and we will reschedule when possible.
The mentoring of specific Year 11, 12 and 13 students (which started last week) will continue to happen as normal, taking place (at least) every fortnight. Parents of these specific students have all been contacted recently.
I shared with parents yesterday our online learning policy and today we have immediately begun its implementation.
As the policy states, we have been preparing for this, and now staff need the time to plan for effective learning. It is uncertain times and we are facing the possibility of long(er) term closure. We are determined to ensure our provision is exciting and engaging - that is we are determined not to set ‘cover’ lessons on Google Classroom.
To achieve the above, staff will need to amend their lessons and resources for the online platform. Therefore, the structure of this week will be:
Tuesday 17th March
Staff planning day. Students can attend if they need to pick anything up. Students should spend their day making sure they have all their resources ready. Prepare a suitable work space at home, get books ready, stationary? Printer (might be wise), check timetable?
Wednesday 18th March
Years 11-13 Parent Teacher Conference: teachers will send a google hangout invitation to the student directly at appointment time. Appointment sheet here. Can I request that we focus these meetings on your child’s progress in their subject. It will be very difficult for staff to discuss online learning or make predictions about school closure. If you have concerns, then please email me on: email@example.com. You can also contact the school on: +60 17 697 9806. Parents, staff and students can use this number to contact us in an emergency.
Years 7-10: lessons and activities will be available on google classroom (no hangout lessons as teachers are on PTC)
Thursday 19th March
Friday 20th March
As you can see, our online policy is about connectivity. It is unsettling that we need to practise social distancing during a period when we most need to be with our community. This is a challenging period for us all; we are acutely aware that our young people may be feeling very unsettled and vulnerable. Please help me in assuring everyone that we will stay connected, in as many ways as we can. We will certainly issue:
Daily messages, via emails or videos or both, from myself and the senior leadership team.
We will produce the parent newsletter weekly as usual.
We can get in touch via email or phone call.
Teachers will connect virtually with students daily.
Thank you for your kind comments and evident support in recent days, they have all been well received. For all of us, these are challenging times and it is heartening to know that the BSKL community is so supportive and kind.
Best wishes to you and your families at this unprecedented time.
