It has never been more important for children to learn how to become sound stewards of the global environment. The children on Lower Campus have repeatedly shown genuine care for our planet and are skilled in thinking of creative ideas to help.
Never has this been more apparent than Earth Day on April 22nd, when Lower Campus joined with communities worldwide to celebrate our environment. Throughout the day, students had many focused and interesting discussions about what Earth Day is and how we can help. Our Year 3 and 4 House Captains made a special video, giving advice on how we can support the environment, even as we remain at home.
Many children also contributed by creating colourful and informative posters to raise awareness. Even our youngest children in the EYFS are getting involved and helping the environment by growing plants at home and at their dachas.
The Student Council has also been active throughout the year, developing an idea for a new campus-wide recycling program. In January, we launched this program as mysterious green boxes started to appear in all the classrooms, including Mr Ahearne’s and Mr Noack’s offices!
These boxes had the sign ‘recycling’ and are there to serve the purpose of storing paper that can no longer be reused. Andrey and Sasha, two Year 4 School Councillors, gave an impassioned speech, explaining the paper recycling concepts to the children in their assembly. Even our Nursery and Reception children were keen to support. Every child on Lower Campus knows where to put used scrap paper and why we are doing this.
Whether on Campus or in our Virtual School learning environment, the children of ISM always learn the importance of our planet and the principles of personal responsibility.
