Dover Court International School's 45th Birthday culminated on Friday 12th May with a host of events and activities to celebrate this important milestone. For two weeks we had a video crew filming students, parents and staff singing 'You've Got a Friend' to commemorate the event; Click here to see the clip on youtube!

VIP guests, including dignitaries and previous alumni, all shared in the celebrations at a very special Friday assembly.  As a non-uniform day, everyone was asked to come in their best 70s gear (since DCIS was founded in 1972), and our amazing school spirit did not disappoint. Students came decked out in flourescent colours, tie-dye, headbands and whatever they could find to fit into the 70s motif. Even the staff took part, donning floral prints and afro wigs.

During assembly, children from the school and staff members sang the birthday track 'You've Got a Friend', a song originally written and recorded in 1972 by James Taylor; we have uploaded a special video clip of the song, sung by students, staff and parents which was shot and produced by Mark Lowther, a DCIS parent. We then presented the winner of the badge contest and showed off the metal time capsule which was buried the following week, a time capsule to be dug up in 50 years time.

As a finale, we sung the old DCIS school anthem – based on Beethoven’s Ode to Joy – to the delight of Dr. Maureen Roach, former DCIS Principal and Guest of Honour on the day. Dr. Roach kindly cut the cake commemorating the event, a superb multi-tiered dessert cake designed exclusively for the school's 45th birthday by local bakery, Little Miss Muffet Cakes. And the lovely flower arrangements in Cooper Hall and DCIS Cafe were provided by the Singaporean floral company Urban Meadow Flowers.

Participants were then treated to a birthday breakfast at the school's DCIS cafe, where special memories were shared and thanks were given to the staff, parents and the local community.  We honoured all our long-standing staff members with flowers and awards, as some of our colleagues have been here for 20 years or more. Everyone then enjoyed a slice of the special cake  and we all wore our 45 Year Anniversary birthday badges.

A time capsule was later buried at the school to mark the occasion with a number of special items tracing the school's history and birthday celebrations. The items included:

  • Memories of our birthday celebrations from EYFS
  • An essay entitled ‘Why we love Dover Court School’
  • An adapted pieces from the Giving Tree called ‘The Giving School’
  • A newspaper article on ‘Life at Dover Court, Now and Then’
  • Memories of Sports Day 2017
  • A wordle of what DCIS means to us
  • Postcard and video sharing our feelings and experiences from Year 6

We wish to thank every one of our students, staff and families who helped make this two week event such a success. And we look forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary in five years!

Kind regards,

Mr. Andrew Marshall
Acting Deputy Head (Lower Primary)
