Korean National Cuisine Comes to BIS HCMC

30 March 2018

"Food exceeds all boundaries and reminds us even in diversity that we have much in common." - Shweta Mangal

One of the core values of the British International School, HCMC is to create a 'sense of community and harmony' among its multicultural population and sharing food can be a profound experience.

  • Korean National Cuisine Day
  • National Cuisine Day - Australia
  • National Cuisine Day - Italian
  • National Cuisine Day - Germany

In an effort to celebrate our diversity the Parent Teacher Group at BIS Secondary has effectuated the idea of holding a weekly food fiesta at the Secondary school canteen. We felt that a food fiesta would be an ideal method of sharing the unique culture of our different countries.

To put this into place we teamed up with the catering unit and the school administration, which was a wonderful experience.

This enjoyable affair commenced at the Secondary Campus with the Korean cuisine. It was a great opportunity to discover the rich flavors of Korean food such as Kimchi, Bulgogi etc.

It was rather a groovy experience for parents as well as the school children. The Korean mums shared recipes with the catering staff and taught them the nitty-gritty of the food from their homeland. They indulged in tasting sessions. The children enjoyed the Korean cuisine during lunch time over a week. The enthusiasm of the Korean mums was beyond food. They made the experience more real by decorating the place to showcase Korea.

It's been a great beginning; although there is always scope for improvement. We're hoping to bring in more zest by having parents wearing their national costume and asking the volunteer parents to serve the food. Incorporating one or more vegetarian dishes would definitely be a delight for the vegetarians.

We ask you to send your ideas and feedback as we strive to continue efforts to improve the experience for the  BIS HCMC students.
