Mr Ian Battersby: Weekly Update 08/06/18

Human interaction is essential for brain development.  In her recent visit, Dr Angie Wigford explained this with a tennis analogy – ‘serve and return’, beginning as soon as babies can focus on faces.  When we see a baby, we will often smile and say ‘hello’ (the serve).  The baby looks back and smiles (return), especially with those who they are familiar with.

These interactions become more complicated involving non-verbal cues and then lead into conversations.  Each interaction strengthens the connections in the brain.  The more interactions, the more developed the brain becomes.  The brain continues to develop throughout life – there is no limit to learning!

This week in F1 and F2, it has been our pleasure to welcome in mums, dads, grandparents and friends to share the amazing learning that has been taking place over the course of this year.  Our wonderful teachers and teaching assistants carefully plan activities and set up stimulating environments that will encourage these brain building interactions.

A Week of Celebrations in F2

IMG_6559

Our F2 children have made remarkable progress this year! It is quite amazing to think that just 4 months ago, they were in the process of moving to a new school environment, learning new routines, and meeting new teachers. Those 4 months of big changes have made our children more resilient, independent, and definitely more confident. The performances showcased by our units this week proved this, and it was a proud moment for all parents and teachers.

Thao Dien Clean-Up

Clean up

You may have noticed that the rubbish carts that used to be on the pavement between the Early Years and Infant Campus and the Secondary Campus have gone.  This is part of an agreement that BIS, HCMC has made with the local authorities to clean up Thao Dien and make the environment better for pedestrians.

The Global Goals Club would like to invite you to join them in their second Thao Dien Clean-Up event. The clean-up will take place on Saturday 23rd June, from 8.30am - 11.30am.

Traffic

Driver’s Code of Conduct

In order to keep our children safe on the roads outside BIS, both before and after school, please can you spend a few minutes of your time discussing the following points with your drivers.

  • Never stop on or near to a pedestrian crossing – in order to ensure that our families can cross the road safely, please instruct your driver to park as far away from the main gates as possible to avoid congestion. Try walking a short distance to keep cars down to a minimum.
  • Only park in designated areas – ask your driver to meet you at a convenient location away from the school gates and please ask them to never double park as this stops the flow of traffic at peak times. Alternatively, there is space to park past Hem 215 on Nguyen Van Huong.  Drivers can wait here until a convenient time for you and your child to be picked up.  Please never let them park on the pavement.
  • Never U Turn along the stretch of road outside all 3 BIS campuses – tell your driver to drive away from school and if they have to U Turn, please do so on the wider, less congested roads. Try the route past Junior campus along Nguyen Van Huong, as an alternative way to get home – it may take a few extra minutes driving but it will save the time you spend in traffic.
  • Ask your driver to show respect to our guards and follow their instructions – they are there to keep you all safe and have a difficult job when drivers ignore their instructions.
  • Be considerate of other road users - explain to your driver that their actions reflect upon your family. Ask them to respect all of our community to make our school the very best that it can be.

We all have our part to play – thank you.

Health and Safety

Stay Vigilant

As in all major cities petty crime does occur, as a reminder to all of us please always take care of your personal belongings when walking across roads and along the pavements.

Supervision

It is important to note that in the mornings, playground supervision from BIS staff begins at 7:20am and finishes at 7:45am.  If children choose to play on the equipment before this time, it is the responsibility of the adult dropping them at school to supervise their own child.  From 2:20pm children must also be supervised by the adult collecting them, both around and on the playground equipment.

Safeguarding at school – it’s everyone’s responsibility

Photographs

It is every parent’s wish to capture memorable moments on camera of their child at school either performing in an assembly, on their birthday or simply playing with their friends on the playground before the start of the school day.  Any photos that are taken by parents on personal devices must be kept private.  They must not be shared publicly on social media or between non-family members such as, other parents in the school.  By following these guidelines, we ensure our BIS safeguarding policy is adhered to and that our children are kept safe.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

If, during your visit to school, you have any reason to be concerned about the safety of a young person, please contact the Designated Safeguarding Person.

Please note that CCTV cameras are in operation at all times across the campus.

Thank you,

And Finally…

We have three great events coming up.  I know a lot of our Year 1 children have signed up for the BIS Aquathlon tomorrow and I look forward to seeing them compete in this exhilarating event.  In addition, we have two further opportunities for your children to present their learning and achievements this year.  Next week on Tuesday 12th June, we have the Y1 and Y2 Music Concert at 5pm and on Wednesday 13th June we have the F3 Summer Concert at 8:30am.  Both events will be held in the EY&I Sports Hall.  I look forward to sharing these special moments with you over the next week.
