Secondary PTG Fundraising 2018-19

Using the funds raised from the 2018 Christmas BISzaar, the Secondary PTG are helping to fulfill funding requests of the secondary campus community partners as a thank you for the fantastic educational opportunities they offer BIS students via exchange activities throughout the year.

As a yearly tradition, BIS Secondary PTG raises funds through the Christmas BISzaar so it can help support the needs of community partners who have been involved in secondary campus year projects, events and clubs. The secondary students helped shoot a short video promoting the BISzaar and encouraging donations to community partners and their causes:

Before the Christmas BISzaar, the BIS Community Service Office reached out to community partners and discussed their needs to place them on the wish-list for the PTG to consider. Our aim was to move towards sustainable endeavors rather than consumables. We also gave priority to education related needs in line with the school’s strategic goals when it comes to community service learning.

Endangered Asian Species Trust (EAST) asked BIS students to get creative by painting murals on benches with awareness raising messages about animal rights and the illegal trade of wild animals in Vietnam. The PTG agreed to fund the benches and the paint with 18,000,000 VND. BIS students are working on the benches with the help of the art department and they will be transported to Cat Tien National Park shortly.

Supporting the Week Without Walls activities, the PTG funded a day trip for Year 8 and 9 students to the Ky Quang Pagoda orphanage. The donation of 3,800,000 VND provided arts and crafts resources needed by BIS students to decorate the pagoda nursery room in addition to lunch for the children there.

Knowing that the children under the care of Ky Quang Pagoda are disadvantaged and with multiple disabilities, the PTG agreed to generously provide 75,850,000 VND to cover annual medical insurance for 105 children as well as tuition fees for 25 children.

The Year 8 residential trip to Dalat included an activity day with the Dalat School for Hearing Impaired. In preparation for this activity, Year 8 students had a booth at the BISzaar making Christmas decorations and games to raise funds to be able to gift their peers at the Dalat School when they met them. The PTG agreed to further fund the residential trip with 2,400,000 VND allowing for an even bigger gift of stationery tools to the Dalat School. The Year 8 students were kindly offered sign language lessons by the teachers of our community partner Anh Minh School for the Hearing Impaired in preparation for their trip.

Anh Minh School for the Hearing Impaired is seeking to improve its vocational training programme to better equip its students for the labour market and overcome their disability. The PTG agreed to fund basic graphics software to be included in Anh Minh School's Year 9 vocational curriculum at a cost of 11,000,000 VND.

With a strong belief in the importance of recycling and the school’s community role in environmental preservation, the PTG is also partially funding the Precious Plastic Project implemented by the Global Goals Club with 10,000,000 VND to build the heating and extruding kit to melt plastic pellets down and push into moulds.

Supporting the Year 9 road safety group project, the PTG funded the procurement of safety helmets for community partner children from An Binh government school with 10,000,000 VND. The helmets will be distributed in a fair that will take place on 2nd April 2019.

Thao Dien School for the Disabled were happy to know that the PTG will be funding their long sought after life skills training at a cost of 10,800,000 VND. The training will help teach the school staff how to manage and psychologically support children with disabilities in a school environment.

Mai Tam House of Hope is building a new facility to accommodate the increasing numbers of children with HIV/aids under its care. The PTG agreed to donate 23,254,000 VND to help set up learning areas around the new facility and pay school fees for 7 students.

Huynh Van Ngoi School is a long-standing partner for BIS’ “Teaching English Club”, and yearly the PTG funds stationery gifts for the students who take part in the club at a cost of 2,000,000 VND.

Continuing the endeavours from last year to support Christina Noble Children’s Foundation, the PTG agreed to fund scholarships for secondary students with 33,000,000 VND.

Incredibly, this brings the total funds raised by the secondary PTG to 200,104,000 VND. Here at the Community Service Office, and on behalf of our community partners, we would like to thank the PTG for their generosity and support.
