Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 05/04/2019

Sean O
Sean O'Neill (58 posts) Head Teacher, Secondary Campus View Profile

Dear parents,

As they approach the end of their BIS journey a group of our Year 13 students who have been at BIS since they were toddlers joined Early Years and Infant students to talk about their favourite memories of primary school this week.

Several of our Year 13 have over 10 years studying here and some presenting at this assembly were able to speak of 15 years growing and learning as part of the BIS family - true historians of the life and times of the school and their part in its community.

Student stories and recollections are always of great interest to those younger members of the school. They offer a guide and role modelling that helps ensure the meaning of our Aide Memoire values remain alive and well understood in students of all ages.

I hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter in which  I include updates from the field of sport, MUN, theatre performance, PTG and entrepreneurial success - all ingredients in the memories of our veteran students this week.

Also, please look out in your inbox regarding the PTG AGM and Election process.

Overview of the week’s activities

Saigon Enterprise Challenge 2019

BIS_SaiGon Enterprise Challenge 1

On Thursday night 4 teams of students from BIS competed in the Saigon Enterprise Challenge hosted in BVIS. Our teams achieved a clean sweep of all 7 awards on offer, including the ‘Best overall team’ award which went to Elysian Vietnam.  Students Alice Lee, Kimberley Jewell, Emily Kim, Aina Solis, Cherry Yang and Teemay Nguyen comprised the team selling hand-made soap. The team successfully negotiated, marketed and sold their way to the top prize despite tough competition from the other eleven teams in the competition.

Huge congratulations on this exceptional performance to all of our entrepreneurs!

My thanks to the Business and Economics team who have provided the teams with such care and support during the 7 month project culminating in Thursday’s achievements.

SAIMUN Conference 2019

Once again the MUN teams from around Saigon convened to find a peaceful solution to some of history’s most pressing issues.

Model United Nations student delegates once again have prepared with deep research, developed their public speaking skills and of course, their teamwork.

It is no surprise that this is a very popular co-curricular activity at BIS as it is a great way to develop the mindset and skills required of a concerned global citizen - required more than ever in citizens and leaders of the future who carry with them a strong social conscience and a desire to act upon it.

PTG Street Basketball Tournament

PTG Street Basketball Tournament

Last Saturday our first BIS “Street” Basketball event took place and was enjoyed by students of all ages. Thank you to our PTG Sports Coordinators Andy Lyons and Arie Riany for creating this great new sporting event in the BIS calendar.  Find out more in this post by PTG member Andy.

Success for BIS Barracudas at the AIS Swim Meet 2019

Success for BIS Barracudas at the AIS Swim Meet 2019

Following their successes at the BIS Invitational Swim Meet in February, last Saturday 75 BIS Barracudas from Year 1 to Year 9 headed to the Australian International School to compete in their next invitational swim meet.

I am so pleased to share with you that he BIS Barracudas once again represented us with great sportsmanship and through their hard work and training won the “Overall Highest Points Team” Trophy.

Perhaps the most prestigious of the trophies at a swim meet such as this  is the “Most Effective Team.” This points to the strength right across the age and strokes and the Barracudas were awarded this trophy too! A fantastic whole team effort that we are all extremely proud of. Congratulations to all Barracudas and thanks too must go to the coaching team and as ever, parent supporters.

Ms Emily McClelland, PE Teacher would like to share how our swimmers enjoyed the day at the AIS Swim Meet 2019.
