Mr Ian Battersby: Weekly Update 28/06/2019

And before you know, we have reached the end of another academic year!

Thank you all for your support during this very busy year, full of quality learning experiences at BIS HCMC. Quality learning can only effectively take place with the partnership, support and trust between school, home and the individual child. We are all very proud of what we have achieved this year, most notably the BSO inspection which rated us outstanding in all categories.  Our sincere thanks to you the parents for your input and support throughout.

For those that are leaving BIS, on behalf of our school, we would like to wish you all the very best of luck for the future and encourage you to stay in contact with us. Please remember to follow us through our social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube in order to keep in contact with the many different events that take place across BIS, HCMC on a regular basis.

Hummingbird Award

Community service is an integral part of life at BIS, and each term we recognise those children who have made a particular effort to get involved with the various projects and clubs that are running. One child from each campus who has stood out for their commitment to community service is presented with the ‘Hummingbird Award’.  But why the ‘Hummingbird’?  This term, competitions have been running on the primary campuses to answer this question and to design a new logo. Find out the results by following this link:

NamRunsNam Day

We have a number of teachers leaving BIS this year.  Some are returning to the UK, others have jobs teaching in other international schools, but Ms Naomi is doing something completely different.  Ms Naomi is going to spend several months running from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.  She is hoping that her running will raise awareness and funds for some of the school’s community partners.

To send her on her way, on Thursday we held NamRunsNam Day where the children came dressed in sports clothes or as their favourite sports star, and made donations of 50,000VND to get the fundraising off to a start. Thank you to everyone who contributed, at the EY&IC alone, we raised over 16 million VND.

Ms Ellie who teaches in Year 5 has also made a game called ‘Race to Saigon’.  This has been specifically made to help Ms Naomi’s fundraising efforts.  You can get a copy of the game for 200,000VND from Ms Palm in Reception.

Do You Have Family Who Could Help Ms Naomi?

Ms Naomi is funding the run by herself, to make sure all the money donated will be going to the community partners.  If you have family or friends between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City who might be able to let Ms Naomi stay for a night on her journey, please do let the school know and we will put them in contact with her.

TechNo Day

_Tech-NO Day - 19 - IMG_9017 (1)-min

Last Thursday was TechNo Day – a whole day in school where teachers and children could not use screens.  The feedback has been remarkable from both students and teachers; there was a very different feel to many lessons across the whole school. To find out more, follow the link below:

BIS Summer Holiday Sports Camps

Due to on-going construction and renovation work in each campus that may last the whole of the summer holidays, and in consideration of the health and safety of our children, we have decided to not plan any summer sports camps in July or August this year. We appreciate your understanding of this reasoning. Holiday sports camps will resume in the October holidays.

PTG Update

Once again, a huge thank you to all of our parents who have given time this year to help organise and run events for the BIS Community.  All your hard work is appreciated.  Enjoy the holiday, and we look forward to working with the new committee in August.

Health and Safety

Holidays are an opportunity to visit new places and try new activities.  During all of what you choose to do this summer, we wish for you to stay healthy and safe.  We will see you back in August, well rested and ready to learn and develop further at school.

And Finally…

What a wonderful year – the first full year at the Early Years and Infant Campus!  I am incredibly proud of all that we have achieved this year.  I work with an amazing team of teachers, teaching assistants and support staff who are all committed to making our school the best it can be.  Every day I talk to parents who are so supportive of what we are trying to achieve at BIS.  And the best part of my job…being with the children who are so enthusiastic about their learning, and seeing them grow and develop, and achieve beyond expectations. Thank you for making my job the best job in the world!

After achieving so much, it is now time for all of us to have a well-deserved holiday. I look forward to seeing most of you again in August, and for those who are moving on, best of luck and keep in touch.

Wishing you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday,

Ian Battersby, Head of the Early Years and Infant Campus
