Starting this fall, the high school will institute a Student Advisory Council. This council will work to serve many purposes, the primary of which is to increase student voice. We recognize that the landscape of education is changing, and the ways that we can engage and empower our students must grow with the times. Many of us adults realize the difference between education when we were younger and the education that students have now. The content may not be strikingly different, but the ways that students learn best certainly has changed. Our teachers have done a good job of adjusting their processes to reach the students; however, the best people to ask about these adjustments are the students who sit in class each day.
During Laker Learning Time (LLT) on Monday and Tuesday, teachers asked for student volunteers to be part of this council. Ideally, there will be one representative from each of the LLTs which will amount to a minimum of 40 students. Hearing from 40 student representatives from the grade levels can be truly powerful, and I cannot wait to see hear what they are excited about as well as what is challenging to them. Students will meet in various configurations, starting with an overall council meeting with all grade levels represented at the first meeting. From there, we will hold grade-level specific meetings to gather feedback.
I expect that we educators will be challenged to improve in different ways so that student empowerment increases as we are tackling issues raised by Generation Z. We want them to see their education as something that they are a part of, and the Student Advisory Council is a great starting point. ~ Dr. Leslie Williams, High School Director
