Dear Parents

In the English-American language, the metaphor “full steam ahead” refers to steam generated transport (think of trains and boats in the 19th century).  These vehicles transformed possibilities for the human race.  In our 21st century education vocabulary, STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts and Mathematics) has a different meaning but its impact is going to be as transformative, as the steam generated transport revolution.

British International School Hanoi’s senior leadership team have just returned from Thailand, where the Nord Anglia Regional Senior Leaders Conference was held.  Ms Vaughan, Assistant Head of Curriculum, unveiled the plans of BIS Hanoi for transforming our classroom spaces and further enhancing learning in the STEAM subjects.  Speaking with delegates in breakout sessions, the plans were well received.  One delegate remarked, “On this week’s evidence, BIS Hanoi are the furthest along in this exciting journey.”

Science Week 12-16 March

I am sure you would like to see some of this evidence for your own eyes, if so, I strongly recommend you attend our Science Week assembly, next Friday (16 March, 8:40 am, the Auditorium).  It promises to be quite a show and will be the climax to a week of scientific discovery, wonder and stimulation.

FOBISIA Secondary Mathematics Competition, Shanghai

Good luck to our team of Key Stage 3 mathematics students, whose skills will be tested in China, when they compete against other schools from the Asia region, this weekend.  Some of the students attending also displayed work in our recent Key Stage 3 Art expedition, which only serves to highlight the success of our integrated approach to the development of STEAM skills.

Outstanding Sporting Success in Phuket, Thailand

The victorious Under 13 FOBISIA sports squad returned to school, this week, having excelled in competition against other international schools.  The team won the boys and girls football tournaments and the girls’ basketball tournament.  The boys gained 3rd place in Basketball.  We were placed 2nd in swimming and 3rd in athletics.  We were the only school that medaled in each of the four disciplines of swimming, football, basketball and athletics (girl and boy categories).  We are so proud of our student athletes whose outstanding performance was built on a foundation of dedicated training that stretched over months.

Tim Webb, Head of Secondary.
