Weekly update from Head of Primary

Dear Parents,

What an extraordinary week it has been in the Primary school. Full of colour, celebrations, and learning more about each other. We know that if we listen to each and everyone to understand, we build empathy and compassion, and whilst we may not always agree on everything, we can challenge ourselves to continue to learn and grow.

Nelson Mandela said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world’. Whilst these events in isolation may not have an immediate impact, it is the education and learning we gain from having a rich and broad curriculum that helps to shape our students to make a difference, to others and a better world.

There have been so many highlights this week, including the Parade of Nations, parent led activities, embassy visitors, the International Buffet and the Cultural Exchange to name just a few.

This morning, I met with the House Captains to get their reflections on why International week is important and here is what they said:
“It's important to celebrate other countries and cultures and explore them. I think we have lots of different nationalities in our school and if we enjoy them, it makes people feel like they belong,” shared Bay

“During International Week, we can have a piece of travelling and experiencing other countries without having to leave BIS”, said Ashton

Drew said, “Its important so we know what other countries are like and know its not just our own culture that is important but others’ too."

"When you celebrate others’ it makes them feel valued and safe" , Yuzuki reflected.

"I loved wearing my own traditional clothes but seeing others wearing theirs and seeing what they represent",  Hyo Lim said.

Listening to these reflections made us all feel extremely proud to be part of our BIS Community and it has been reflected in conversations that have been had between staff and students and parents and staff, over the course of this week.

I would like to celebrate and congratulate everyone on a fantastic week and thank everyone for their efforts this week. It has been truly incredible.

So rest now and recharge, have a wonderful half term holiday and we look forward to seeing back at school on Monday 24th October.
