The Green Group, one of our Early Years Classes, celebrated World Pizza Day by making their own individual pizzas. The class have recently been interested in ‘Pete the Cat’ stories by Eric Litwin. They especially enjoyed ‘Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party’.
This is a brilliant story for introducing alliteration as Pete adds pepperoni, pretzels, pistachios, pickles, popcorn and papaya to his pizza – lots of ingredients beginning with the sound ‘p’. We started our pizza by making the dough. We carefully weighed the flour, using digital scales, and measured the other ingredients, discussing the importance of yeast. We observed the difference in the dough once we added the water.
The students especially enjoyed kneading and stretching the dough. After the dough had rested we rolled out a circular shape and added our chosen toppings – there was so much to choose from – tomatoes, mozzarella, peppers, ham, salami and pineapple. The pizzas looked and smelt delicious once cooked!
