Last week, the Junior Changemakers organised a house competition to measure how much food is wasted each day by the Primary students at lunchtime. Students from Year 1 to Year 6 were required to put their leftover food in different containers, according to their house colour team, and then the containers were weighed by the Changemaker students with points awarded for the house team with the least amount of waste.
The purpose of this challenge is to raise awareness of how much food is wasted at school, where the waste goes (into landfills) and how this is harmful to our planet. Building on information already given in Primary assemblies about where our food comes from, we want students to appreciate how much energy, water and effort is used to bring food to us on our plates every day.
Results will be announced next week in assembly. Thank you to all involved, especially the kitchen and dining room staff and those students who gave up their lunch breaks to make this a success!
