This Thursday, Year 6 went to the High voltage Lab, part of the Technical University. All of them experienced how the basics of electricity works. When everyone arrived they split in half with the classes. There were two activities to do.
6 Amber and 6 Copper went upstairs to one of the university classrooms. We used different tools, magnets and balloons. For the magnets we learned that positive and negative attract, but positive and positive or negative and negative repel each other. For static we used balloons: we rubbed the balloons against our hair and the paper stuck onto it.
Meanwhile, 6 Lava and 6 Bronze were downstairs in the High Voltage lab. They experienced high voltage electricity. They had a guide which explained how it worked, and the dangers of it. When they turned the lights off the electricity glowed, it looked like a spider web, it was interesting but loud. They all enjoyed the part when some of them sat in a box, and electricity zaps above them, it was perfectly safe.
After an hour the groups swapped so we all had a chance to learn from and enjoy all the activities. Altogether it was a wonderful experience: Year 6 really enjoyed it.
