The Korean parents, ably assisted by some of our Korean students, led 4 different traditional games. They included Jegichagi (a 'keepy uppy' style game), Ddakjichigi (a game requiring you to flip an opponent’s tile on the floor), Dakssaum (A chicken fight game that involves children hopping on 1 leg trying to knock their opponent off balance) and Tuho ( a game involving throwing blunted arrows into a bucket for points!). These games were very much loved by the students.
The Chinese parents organised a range of different activities, again supported by some of our Year 6 Chinese students. The activities include a shadow puppet show, making dragons (using a concertina of tissue paper), traditional, interlocking wooden puzzles, Chinese calligraphy, mask making of characters from the Beijing Opera, and body art! This room was very popular with the students!
Ms. O’Keeffe and Mr. Payn also ran different activities. Mr. Payn was focusing on traditional British games, hosting a conker competition and Ms. O’Keeffe explored the origin of the students’ names.
Thank you very much to the parents who came in to support the experiences for our students.
Some quotes from our students:
Nuala (6 Lava) “It was really enjoyable making the dragons and the parents were very helpful. I am really looking forward to the Korean activities as well.”
Mila (6 Amber) “ I have enjoyed researching about what my name really means – mine means miracle. I also liked making Chinese dragons and getting panda tattoos!”
Judy (6 Bronze) “ I loved doing the Tuho game in the Korean room and I have enjoyed making the paper dragons in the Chinese room”
Juan (6 Bronze) “ I really liked trying to solve the interlocking Chinese puzzles, trying to put them back together as well as playing in the chicken fighting game with the Korean parents – it was really fun!”
Derek (6 Lava) “ I liked it when the students were coming into the room and I could help out with the Chinese shadow puppets activity.”
