In July we, two of our talented pupils, Luca and Flora, went to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in Glasgow to join the ‘Acting for camera’ summer camp course. They had a lot of fun, learnt a lot, and met many people from all around the world. Glasgow is a beautiful city, but was very cold compared to Budapest, for the first few days it was hard for them to adjust to the colder climate.
They endured a 5-day course and were asked to arrive prepared with a monologue and duologue, which they performed in front of a camera. They usually started the day with drama games, that were quite fun and got all 24 of them in the mood to act. Stage and camera acting were very different, it is necessary to be much more careful with the gestures to ensure that all the actions stay in the frame of the lens, also facial expressions are much more crucial. Their performances were taped, and their teachers gave them detailed feedback which helped them improve their performance.
Two amazing professional instructors led their course, an actress and a filmmaker, who gave them many insights into the film industry and what it is like being behind a camera. With the class they analysed movie scenes, and the filmmaker, helped them understand why certain scenes were shot in the way they were originally meant to be. They also learnt a lot from observing others in their class perform their monologues and duologues, because it gave them a different perspective on what they would have to do.
All the things they learnt in the RCS can be applied to their drama lessons in school, and their exams. They had a wonderful time and might be back next year for a different course.
