Year 6 Explores Migration Through a Woodland Adventure
On Wednesday morning, Year 6 embarked on another adventure with a thought-provoking trip into the woods. As part of our introduction to the migration topic, students were challenged to pack a bag in under 10 minutes, limited to a maximum of 10 items at home and bring it into school with them. The aim was to simulate the difficult choices a refugee might face when fleeing their home due to forced migration.
During the activity, students encountered five different scenarios, each presenting a unique challenge. They had to make critical decisions, such as whether to stay with a group or venture alone, and whether to walk or attempt to secure a taxi to escape a danger zone.
This immersive experience encouraged students to think deeply about the complexities of migration, fostering empathy and a greater understanding of the difficult decisions faced by those in such situations.
While the weather initially added an extra challenge, it also helped to simulate the uncomfortable conditions that many people endure during their journeys.
Reflections from 6 Amber class revealed thoughtful insights. Students shared that they didn’t enjoy carrying heavy bags, noticed how quickly their fingers got cold, and wished they had packed different items. They also felt that the activity provided a meaningful opportunity for them to empathise—albeit on a small scale—with the difficulties people face when they have limited time to pack and must travel without essential equipment or personal belongings in difficult conditions.
Next week, we will begin exploring the wide range of reasons why people migrate, focusing on various push and pull factors.
