As part of the Narrative Writing unit that Year 5 have been studying in their English classes, the children have learnt how to retell a story using ‘talk for writing’.

They have developed hand actions to represent various types of conjunctions found in the text, and have been developing movements to help them remember the key stages of the story. They have then been able to use these as a scaffold to retell the story in a summarised form. The children have found this personalised form of learning both enjoyable and useful as they are able to memorise and retell the story in a way that works for them. Once they have fully learnt the story, Year 5 will begin analyzing just what it is that makes Ted Hughes such a great writer, using and adapting his language to write their own stories.
