The Year 2s have been very busy learning all about measurement!
We kicked off our new measurement unit by learning to measure lengths and heights in centimetres and metres. We used our rulers to measure random objects in the classroom and then practised arranging items in their lengths either from smallest to biggest or from biggest to smallest. We also learnt how to measure bigger things by using metre sticks and even challenged ourselves to measure the entire length of the Year 2 corridor!
Next, we learnt how to measure the mass of items using grams and kilograms. We learnt how to estimate the mass of an object and then used analogue kitchen scales to measure the actual mass. We also learnt to pay careful attention to the readings on scales to know how to read the values when the gauge is in between numbers.
Finally, we learnt the difference between volume and capacity by using non-standard units of measurement to measure the amount of water in different sized containers. We learnt new terminology such as ‘full, empty, nearly full and nearly empty’ when describing volume. The children could use jugs, yoghurt pots and spoons to fill up the containers and had to document how many of each it required to fill up the containers. We then started practising more accurate measuring by using measuring jugs and cups to measure the correct millilitres and litres capacity of containers by having fun outside!
