A magical transformation is underway as our youngest BSB Sanlitun explorers dive into an exploration of light. Our immersive theme, Twinkle and Glow, is guiding our Pre-Nursery children to discover the beautiful contrasts between light and dark. This sensory-rich investigation sparks a deep sense of wonder and lays the very first foundations of scientific inquiry and artistic expression.

We introduced the children to striking opposites, like black and white, and light and dark, creating an opportunity to build a foundational understanding of the world through comparison and categorisation. This exploration sharpens their perception, enriches early vocabulary, and teaches that difference itself is a source of beauty, curiosity, and meaning.

We created vibrant artworks of contrast using paint, stickers, and a variety of materials. The children explored the distinct properties of shiny and matte surfaces, deliberately selecting and layering each type; like placing a glittery sticker next to a matte paper shape to observe the dramatic visual effects of their choices. This hands-on sensory investigation brought the fundamental artistic concept of juxtaposition to life, transforming abstract ideas into tangible, creative discovery.

Next, we explored manipulating light. The children investigated light sources like fairy lights, LED tea lights, and torches. They experimented by shining lights through coloured paddles and fabric, seeing the world bathed in new hues and watching their own hands glow. This sensory play built an early understanding of cause and effect, as they discovered they could control and transform their environment, all while marvelling at the beautiful interaction of light and colour.

Our 'Twinkle and Glow' explorations are deeply nurturing the children's social and emotional development too. We gently guided the children to understand dark as a natural, gentle absence of light. From this secure base, they learnt to articulate feelings of awe and curiosity, moving from potential apprehension to a flourishing sense of wonder, empowering them to become confident explorers.

They are not just learning about a physical phenomenon; they are building an inner bravery and trust in their environment. Central to this is creating a secure, calm base from which to investigate this experience. We supported the learning with wonderful literature, sharing stories like "Wow! Said the Owl" to model a sense of wonder, and "Flashlight" to illustrate curiosity and bravery in the dark. The dark has become a safe, calm backdrop which makes 'light' feel magical and special.
