Week 11, Term 1, 2025/2026
Throughout October, the BSKL community came together to celebrate Black History Month, exploring the rich culture, origins, histories, and achievements of African and Caribbean communities and their diaspora.

The theme for Black History Month UK 2025, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”, served as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe. This year’s theme honoured Black leaders, activists, artists, and pioneers who have shaped history, while inspiring reflection on empowerment, unity, and growth.

Across the secondary school, students engaged with daily stories and discussions highlighting influential figures from the Black community. Our Secondary Librarian, Mr. Syamsul Azrin bin Badul Zaman, curated a special collection of books to support students in deepening their understanding of Black history and identity.

Highlights from the recommended reading list included:

  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
  • Mandela by Martin Meredith
  • Hope in a Ballet Shoe by Michaela and Elaine DePrince
  • The Girl Who Smiled Beads by Clemantine Wamariya
  • The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander
  • Natives by Akala

For older students and parents, Akala’s Natives proved particularly thought-provoking, offering a brilliantly written exploration of Black British history and identity.

Black History Month at BSKL reinforced our shared belief that understanding the past empowers future change. By recognising the achievements, struggles, and resilience of the Black community, we continue to nurture a culture of respect, empathy, and equality: values that define our school and guide our students toward becoming globally minded citizens.
