Studying at BVIS, Bao Tuan graduated in 2020. The friendly and positive learning environment at BVIS helped Tuan confidently explore his potential, nurture his passion for scientific and technological research, and build a solid foundation for an impressive international academic journey.
After graduation, Tuan received multiple admission offers and ultimately chose a scholarship at Emory College - ranked #21 among the best national universities in the U.S. at the time - with the mindset of “choosing the hardest path.” Over three and a half years, he achieved remarkable success: graduating as top of his class in three majors, completing all coursework for a PhD programme in Computer Science, and earning an extensive list of over 30 national and international awards and recognitions, including the Charles Elias Shepherd Scholarship and the GSK Graduate Scholarship.

During his time at Emory, Tuan enrolled in every course that interested him, including advanced graduate-level seminars, and took enough classes to qualify for a third major (even though Emory officially allows only two). He also served as a teaching assistant and tutor for 12 courses - each with nearly 100 students - in core sciences such as biology, calculus, chemistry, and computer science. Additionally, he worked as an advisor for international student orientation programmes and supported incoming freshmen.
Outside the classroom, Bao Tuan participated in hackathons and math competitions. Beyond that, he completed six internships and collaborated on research projects at leading global institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and Mayo Clinic. At times, Tuan began data analysis at 2 a.m. to align with international work schedules and even spent nights in the lab before attending morning classes in Atlanta. Today, Tuan is not only a young researcher but also an advisor to five AI startups.

“It sounds a bit extreme, I know,” Tuan shared. “But all of this helped me realise what truly excites me: learning how science connects across disciplines and collaborating with people who share that passion.”
This passion led him to a scholarship at Emory’s AI Learning Center, where he organized workshops guiding students and faculty on using machine learning tools to advance discoveries in chemistry, epidemiology, sociology, and beyond.
“Vinh truly stands out,” said Valeda Dent, Emory’s Vice Provost. “In many ways, he is the ideal Emory student: curious and deeply engaged across multiple fields.”
These experiences prepared Tuan for the NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Programme - one of the most prestigious PhD tracks in the world. Tuan is one of nine students accepted into this intensive collaboration between the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and two of the world’s leading universities: Oxford and Cambridge.
During the programmeme, Tuan will focus on genomics and predictive modeling, aiming to identify biomarkers for early diagnosis and effective treatment of complex diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer.

“This school gave me the confidence to take on big challenges. I hope to connect with and inspire future students - believe in your abilities and dare to dream big,” Tuan shared.
Bao Tuan’s journey is a vivid testament to the value of a holistic educational environment—where students are encouraged to explore, innovate, and develop global skills. We are proud to see alumni like Tuan continue to shine and looks forward to creating bridges for future generations to learn and succeed.
