Living Your Dreams.

11 November 2016

The first Careers Conference was held last month offering diverse insights to professional careers that our students may be interested in pursuing.  Two keynote speakers inspired our students to ‘be ambitious’ and live their dreams.

  • LCIS students meeting Miles Hilton Barber after his inspiring speech.

‘Living your dreams’ was the theme of the recent Careers Conference held at La Côte International School.  Students from MYP3 and above chose workshops with professionals from 14 different areas to learn more about their careers (including Engineering, Law, Hospitality, Architecture, Medicine, Sport, Marketing…..) These interactive workshops gave students the opportunity to learn the path to that profession as well as the ‘real life’ details of the job. There were also workshop focussed on Morrisby testing, transferable skills, and applying to universities.

Our students thoughts....

‘’I didn’t realise Maketing & PR was so diverse and exciting!! It’s really caught my attention.’’

‘’I’ve always been interested in Radio & TV, there was so much great advice given in the workshop.’’

Motivation started the day with a speech from Caron Bell, reporter from ITV.  She outlined her key points to a happy career:

  • Chose something you enjoy.
  • Remember that the stuff that makes you happy is free (it’s not all about the money!)
  • Experience is important, embrace all opportunities to get it.
  • If you aren’t happy in your career choice, change!

Inspirational speaker Miles Hilton-Barber closed the day with his entertaining and moving speech.  As a blind adventurer and successful fundraiser, he convinced the audience that ‘the only limits in your life are those you accept yourself’.  He shared his life learnings on a victim mentality, that it isn’t ‘what’ happens to you but what you do with what happens, that is important.  His advice was to dream big and not to limit who you are.  Doing something new might be frightening but FEAR (false evidence appearing real) is ‘wrong thinking’.  The worst that can happen is that you fail, but if you don’t try – you’ve failed anyway!  And it really isn’t as hard as we think it will be!! Teamwork and friendships help along the way to help fill your weaknesses with the strengths and care of others.

He summed up with the following:

  • Start with your dreams, not your problems.
  • Make a decision to live your dreams, if it’s not right, you can change.
  • Plan!  What needs solving?
  • Persevere – it is amazing what you can do.
