Teacher of Mathematics

After graduating from the University of St Andrews in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics, my career initially began in the fruit industry managing a factory packing fruit for large UK retailers. However, my future wife had by that time begun her teaching career and I quickly realised that teaching really was the job for me and in 1997, completed my PGCE (Secondary Mathematics) from Canterbury, Christ Church College.

My first teaching post was at Chatham House Grammar School for Boys on the coast of southern England where I was able to enjoy the challenge of teaching further maths to a very talented group of students whilst relishing the steep learning curve faced by any entrant to the teaching profession

After a thoroughly enjoyable two years, I relocated to Bath in the west of England, where after three years as a second in department joined a girls’ school in Bath to take up the post of head of mathematics. In my five years there I saw the number of students taking A-level mathematics rise from single figures to the low 20s, and the GCSE mathematics pass rate rising from below the national average to far above it.

The importance of lifelong learning for me, became evident when in 2008 I began my Masters Degree in Education at the University of Bath. This was an incredibly rewarding year, working with colleagues from a wide range of schools from all over the world. After spending this year listening to tales of life in the International Education sector, my wife and two young children moved to Doha in the summer of 2009 to begin work at the International School of London, Qatar. Joining this school as a maths teacher, I was fortunate enough to enjoy the opportunities that a growing school provides and after three years was appointed as the head of the secondary school. In this time, the secondary school numbers grew from 70 to 400 at the time of my leaving. However, I am very proud that the community spirit that existed in the school in its earliest days was still maintained.

In February of 2014, I was delighted to be appointed as the first head of secondary at La Côte International School. This appointment came at a very exciting time in the school's development and it is a real privilege to play a part in the development of the school. The community feel of the school made believe very strongly that the school was the right place for me, both as an educator and as a parent. After a very enjoyable first academic year, it is clear to both myself and my wife and also my two sons who have joined the school as students that we have made a great choice in joining La Côte International School.

After three very exciting years as Head of Secondary, I expressed my desire to re-focus my attention on teaching maths, which has always been my life passion. I am really looking forward to helping students develop a love and understanding of maths that will allow them to thrive in their future academic choices.
