Principal Update BVIS HCMC

Mr Simon Higham - Principal

Mr. Simon Higham, Principal

Dear Parents,

As I outlined in last week’s Highlights, the live link to the Parent Satisfaction Survey was sent to all parents on Monday 3rd December. This link is copied below:

Parent Satisfaction Survey 2018-2019

Thank you to all parents who have already completed the survey that helps us better understand how we are performing in key areas - what we are doing well and opportunities for improvement, so that we can continue to provide the best possible educational experience for your child.

Primary students enjoys exciting learning experiences at BVIS

Please help us to reach our goal of a 50% (or more) response rate. Your children should be asking you to help so they can achieve their special treat that I have arranged as a reward for all teachers and children if this target is met and only you can make it happen!

Your feedback really does matter to us.

This week, Christmas has really come to our school with decorations across both Primary and Secondary, a superb Year 2 festive production today and of course our Christmas Funday on Saturday 8th December. I look forward to seeing all of you who are attending and am looking forward to sharing some Christmas lunch that will be on offer to all visitors. I can’t wait!

What is Phonics?

Simply put, phonics is the key for every child to be a successful reader and learner. In learning phonics, a child becomes able to read by understanding the sound that a letter, or group of letters make.

BVIS students enjoys unique phonics books

This makes it possible for the child to look at a word and see it as a code which they can access and ultimately read. Once the child has learned this code of sounds and letters, they can then not only manipulate it to become a successful reader but also an accomplished writer.

At BVIS, we deliver a unique programme of both English and Vietnamese phonics. Read more about our programme in this article and how it is helping our children successful readers and writers within a truly bilingual context.

Congratulations to all our secondary students who attended their residential trips this week. In looking at the many pictures that have been uploaded to the trip blogs, I am very much looking forward to hearing about their adventures in full, when they return to school on Monday.

Finally, I would like to bring to your attention some important dates for your diary:

From Monday 14th to Friday 18th January 2019, we have arranged for a school photographer to visit our school.

During this week, all children will have individual and class photographs taken and these will be able to be purchased should you wish to do so later. I am pleased to announce that we have arranged for additional sibling photographs to be taken after school time, should you wish for this to happen.

Primary Update BVIS HCMC

BIS - BVIS Primary events

This week children and staff visited our school from our sister school, BIS HCMC. We have a close relationship with BIS as both schools belonged to the BIS Group of Schools in Vietnam before merging with Nord Anglia Education in 2015.

It is very beneficial for the children at both schools to be able to meet, learn and develop their skills together as well as compete in a variety of events such as the recent ‘Young Musician of the Year’ competition or the Saigon Maths Competition to be held later in the year.

On Monday, Ms Jordana and our Primary Student Council hosted Mr Matthew and his 18 BIS student councillors for a cross-campus meeting. The children enjoyed their time together playing an ‘ice-breaker’ game to dispel nerves before going on a tour of our campus led by our Student Council Presidents. The BIS children particularly liked our “Imaginarium” on floor 2! Before a delicious lunch, the children shared and discussed the various projects carried out at BIS and BVIS by the two Student Councils, learning about each school’s developments and priorities.

BIS teachers, teaching assistants and children joined our Early Years department for fun in the soft playroom, outdoor area and on the field for a variety of exciting activities. By the time the event was over, all were tired but happy as their Spy Kids mission was accomplished!

Secondary Update BVIS HCMC

Jack

Mr Jack Rudin, Head of Secondary

This week our students in Years 11 to 13 have been working hard on their mock examinations. I have seen them busily revising to do the best they can in these examinations. I am sure that they will do well, and I am looking forward to some excellent results.  This is the beginning of a very important time in their school career. Over the next few months our students will continue to work hard in the run up to their examinations which can make a huge difference to their individual IGCSE and A level results.

BVIS Secondary Students revised for mock exams

I have seen students improve their overall attainment by one or two grades between their mock examinations and their Summer exams. This can make a huge difference to their prospects later in life. The key to making this improvement is to start early by preparing for the Summer exams now. Students who do really well are those that take some of the December break to begin revising work from the year and in particular doing past paper questions to check and improve their understanding. Good luck to all of them in their mock examinations and in preparing for the summer.

Trips Week

Secondary trips have been happening this week. We are developing our trips every year and we want then to be filled with experiences that our students would not normally have. We want them to learn a range of skills that it would not be possible for them to learn within a school environment. We want them to build on the relationships they have formed in school both with their peers and their teachers. Students who have secure and comfortable relationships with their peers and their teachers make much better progress in school and our trips week helps them to grow these relationships further.

Year 7 Mui Ne Trip

There are lots of comments from the students in Year 7 about their trip.

“I'm having a really good time. So far I liked the farm trip the most, I learned how to pick tomatoes and peppers and enjoyed cracking peanuts. I also enjoyed watching the movie with my friends.” (Mai Uyen, 7B)

Year 7 BVIS HCMC to Mui Ne 2018 (10)

“This trip was really awesome so far.  We get to do different types of activities and get to learn different skills. We can also make friends. I think this trip was really worth going on and participating with everyone.” (Chau Minh Hien (Fifi), 7I

“This is a great and fun trip because it is educational and fun for everyone and I think we are having a wonderful time” (Ben 7B)

Year 8 Dalat Trip

Suri in 8I has sent us a report of their trip

Year 8 BVIS visit Da Lat 2018

We had the time of our life in Dalat on the Year 8 trip this year! We enjoyed every single moment, doing lots of thrilling and challenging tasks, and all the Asian Motion’s staff and the teachers joined in as well.  We enjoyed every single moment, doing lots of thrilling and challenging tasks, and all the Asian motion’s staff and the teachers joined in as well. At first we thought that we weren’t able to complete all of the risky activities we have here in Dalat, but in the end everyone completed all the tasks and did amazingly well. The year 8 canyoning was fantastic especially as it is not an easy task abseiling down the rocks. Everyone was pleased they completed it and wanted to try again! Our other activities include high ropes, hiking and camping in the middle of the forest. It was such a unique experience sleeping under the stars and toasting marshmallows by the campfire. The staff and teachers were there all the time and we are so thankful for all the care they put in. Overall, this trip was wonderful, not only did it build bonds between students, it also taught very necessary skills for survival.”

Year 9 Madgui Trip

We have a lovely trip report from Annie.....

Year 9 BVIS to Madagui

"This was the trip that I was looking forward to going on, it was very enjoyable and exciting. My favourite part of the trip was the third day because we got to do zip lining and team building activities and I got to lead my team in one activity. Overall, I particularly loved this year's trip, it was a lot of fun and we got to work with a lot of people that I never get to work with."
- Annie Hong 9B

Year 10 Siem Reap Trip

Year 10 set off early on Tuesday morning to Siem Reap for a trip filled with activities including cycling, hiking, visiting ancient temples and working with children from an orphanage while they there.

All in all, it sounds like they have had a great time and learnt lots of new things.

Some of the students will write a report for us about their experiences when they get back and I am looking forward to both reading and sharing them with you next week.

Thank you for your continued support and please do not hesitate to contact me directly via email: simon.higham@bvisvietnam.com to give feedback on our Weekly Highlights and/or suggest any future topic areas that you would like us to possibly cover in the future.
