Appreciate the Mathematical wonders of Pi!

BVIS HCMC Pi Day 2019 (11)

On the 14th March (3.14) students in year 7 and 8 celebrated Pi day at BVIS HCMC. This was a fantastic opportunity for our school to appreciate the Mathematical wonders of Pi, and for our students to enjoy this in a stimulating and creative way. The students took part in four different activities, which allowed our students appreciate the beauty of Pi:

  • Students created a Pi design for a quarter circle, which will be displayed in the Maths corridor.
  • Students created Pi-kus; a poem where each line has the same number of syllables as the digit of Pi!
  • In one, they were challenged to find the exact value of Pi by drawing circles and using their feet as a measuring tool – some even got as close as 3.15 which was extremely impressive!
  • Students also created a Pi-line, by drawing a city skyline that involved the digit pi wherever possible.

Finally, there was a Pi-reciting competition. Students from each year group were challenged to memorise as many digits as they could, and one student in year 7 managed to recall 104 digits! We had a winner from each year group and their prize was to throw a pie in Mr Rudin’s face! Overall it was an extremely enjoyable day that our students will remember for a long time, allowing them to enjoy Mathematics beyond the classroom and developing a love of learning.
