The House System at BVIS

The house system is a traditional feature of British schools and is a means of dividing the school’s students into groups, thus creating smaller communities within the wider community. Each group is called a "house" and each student is allocated to their house upon enrollment.

Houses may be named after famous historical figures, animals, colours or, as in the case of the British Vietnamese International School, locations in the country where the school is located. The BVIS houses are:

Hanoi (red)

Hue (yellow)

Saigon (blue)

The house system is featured prominently in thousands of stories about schools with some authors writing a whole series of books such as J. K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” stories. Those of you who know the Harry Potter books and films will be familiar with the house system at Harry’s school, Hogwarts:

Slytherin (yellow)

Through our house system, every BVIS student can earn points for their house regardless of age or ability. We encourage all our students to 'have a go' and to persevere, helping their house to achieve the most points and win the house cup at the end of the year.

Housepoints may be awarded for achievement or during competitions including sporting, academic and community activities. Here in the BVIS Primary school, we also link our housepoints to Class Dojo. Each Dojo point is equivalent to a housepoint, thereby providing an even wider range of opportunities for our children to earn points for their house. Attentive listening in class, excellent behaviour around the school and evidence of all elements of the school’s mission statement may therefore result in points.

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much."

Helen Keller

At BVIS we use our house system to provide our students with opportunities to develop social, academic, physical and practical skills both inside and outside of the classroom. Our house system promotes team building, good communication skills and a sense of belonging.
