Principal Update BVIS HCMC

Mr Simon Higham - Principal

Mr. Simon Higham, Principal

Dear Parents

BVIS Central Vietnam Flood Appeal – Update

Following our Halloween activity week and dress up day on Friday, I am pleased to report that to date, our community has currently raised 66,529,000VND.

In addition, we have also collected a large amount of food, clothing and stationery that will be distributed within Quang Tri province in the Central Vietnam region, who have been affected by the flooding and storm damage.

BVIS Emergency Flood Appeal Donations

This week, we have continued our efforts for the flood appeal through further collections of food, clothing and stationery, together with more delicious brownies for sale across the whole week in both Primary and Secondary Foyers.

Once, I have the final total of money raised and items collected, I will update you further on how your integrity, care and respect has helped to support local communities during such challenging times.

Health and Safety – our number one priority

With our enhanced Health and Safety procedures now becoming our ‘new normal’, over the last 2 weeks, we have successfully completed both our Emergency Evacuation and Lockdown drills.

As a regular event in our school calendar, we ensure that all students and staff members are familiar with our emergency drills and fully understand what is needed to do should we find ourselves in an emergency situation. If the fire alarm sounds when you are on site, the assembly point for any school evacuation is the field area.

In addition, should you hear the instructions, ‘Lockdown, Lockdown, Lockdown’ when you are in school, you must go to the nearest lockable room and wait for the ‘Lockdown over, Lockdown over, Lockdown over’ to be sounded.

This weekend, ask your child(ren) to talk you through these drills as they will be able to advise you about what to do, should we face an emergency when you are in school.

Meet our New Teachers

This week, the new teacher in the spotlight is Ms Jessica Blick, who is one of our new Whole School PE Teachers.

BVIS HCMC Staff Ms Jessica Blick

1. Where did you live prior to coming to Vietnam, what role did you have and what was the name of your previous school?

Prior to living in Vietnam, I lived in Qingdao in China for 3 years and I taught at Malvern College Qingdao, where I was Head of Physical Education, Head of House, House Cup Coordinator and the International Award Leader and Coordinator.

2. What were your first impressions of BVIS?

Caring!! When I arrived at BVIS for the first time I was greeted by warm smiles. As soon as I walked through the gates, I felt the energy and friendliness of the entire community. It is lovely to be part of such a positive atmosphere!

3. What is your teaching philosophy in short?

I strongly believe that children of all abilities should be provided with the opportunity to participate in Physical Education both recreationally and competitively. I am passionate about teaching Secondary and Primary school students about the values of participating in Physical Education.

4. What 3 things are you looking forward to doing whilst working and living in Vietnam?

Where do I start?

I am looking forward to travelling to Vietnam and sampling the amazing food and coffee! In particular, I am looking forward to visiting Mui Ne so I can get on the water to windsurf and kitesurf. I am excited to visit the surrounding islands, in particular – Phu Quoc. I also cannot wait to travel the coast of Vietnam on a motorbike!

5. If you could sum up your experience so far in just one word, what would it be?

That is tough! Incredible!!

Engage and Connect further with us!

Thank you for your feedback last week. If you have any further suggestions on how we can further improve this form of communication, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on simon.higham@bvisvietnam.com

Have a safe and relaxing weekend ahead.

Y6 Explore Gender Equality

On Friday we welcomed two visitors to talk to the Y6 children about the successes within their career.  There were two visitors: Ms Ton Hoang Khanh Lan – famous body building in Vietnam national team and  Mrs. Sylvie Ma – Lawyer (Year 6 parent). The concept of gender equality was explored during the discussions to support our learning around the Global Goal. The children had some outstanding questions for the visitors and were visibly inspired by their experiences.  I would like to thank our two guests for taking the time to share and explain their journey to success.

Learning and Progress

As parents, it is important that you stay up to date with your child’s learning and achievements. Working together between home and school has so many valuable benefits for student learning. That is why as a school, we strive for 100% attendance from parents at each Parents’ Evening cycle.  Parents will have received an email last week explaining how to book a meeting time with their child’s class teachers for this term’s cycle.  After polling the parents, we found that there was an even split between parents preferring a face to face meeting compared with parents preferring an online meeting. As a result, parents have a choice this term to book their preferred approach. For questions regarding the upcoming Parents’ Evening Meetings, please contact Ms Mai in the office at mai.truong@bvisvietnam.com

Parents Evenings

Students who are getting the same messages from their parents and their schools tend to do best at school. That why it is important that we have the opportunity talk to you at parents evening and we are very grateful to all the parents that came to school this week to support their sons and daughters at these events.

BVIS HCMC Parents Evening 2020

This week saw BVIS’ inaugural “Rock, Paper, Scissors” House Competition. Students from each year group pitted their nerve and psychological endurance against the opposition to see who would be the ultimate hand wizards of the school. Year 7 and 8 competed on Monday, Year 9 and 10 on Wednesday, and Year 11-13 on Friday. The competition was fiercely contested and culminated in some heated finals. The results of the competition will be released in the coming week.

Physical Education

Our U19 table tennis squad competed in friendly matches this week against AMISVN and SSIS, testing their determination and skill level against a number of highly talented players. There were some great matches and fantastic wins for many members of the squad, who can all be very proud of themselves!

The UKMT Senior Maths Challenge

United Kingdom Maths Trust (UKMT) is a charitable organisation that aims to advance the education of young people in mathematics.

Each year our KS5 Mathematicians enter the Senior UKMT Challenge – a enriching, extra-curricular opportunity which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.  This year, due to Covid 19, the challenge has taken place electronically, rather than on paper.  We look forward to receiving the students’ results later in the academic year.
