Safety First

Thank you to all our BVIS community for your support and patience over the last week and appreciate your support in helping to keep our family safe. Although some parents have been unable to attend events face to face due to large numbers and small spaces, we hope you have enjoyed watching them through our livestreaming capability.

I will be updating you all next week via email, on our current plans for next term and the rest of the academic year ahead. Please ensure that you check your emails regularly for any further updates.

‘Have a Heart’ Returns to BVIS

A few years ago, our school together with support from our community, were able to raise funds to support children who needed heart operations in Vietnam. We are delighted to inform that you that we have now connected with a new partner ‘Vinacaptial Foundation’ and are again able to support children with live-saving heart operations through their ‘Heartbeat Vietnam’ program.

BVIS HCMC Have a heart 2020

In November, the Vinacaptial programme celebrated saving the lives of 8,000 children from congenital heart defects and we are proud to announce that BVIS has been able to sponsor two more operations for children in the last week at Tam Duc Hospital, in District 7.

The first was a small baby girl who had surgery on the 30th of November. She is now recovering and is able to drink milk and eat porridge. The second is a 3-year-old boy who had surgery on 28th November. He is now looking much healthier and has been getting back a normal appetite.  We all feel proud to be able to support our wider Vietnamese community.

We aim to continue our partnership with Vinacapital Foundation and will keep you updated with future ways that we can all help.

Thanks for your continued support of BVIS and our community partners. More updates about our Central Vietnam Flood appeal will be coming in the New Year.

Y6 Exit Point

Y6 have spent the past term studying Ancient Greece during their Lien Ket topic.

On Wednesday, the students showcased their learning and progression with an exhibition filled with fun games and activities for other year groups and teachers to visit and enjoy.  From photo booths with Hera and Zeus to learning Greek numbers, there were so many creative ways to get involved to help celebrate the enjoyment the Y6 students have had during their learning. Each game or activity cost ‘one button’ and buttons were exchanged for money. Overall, 6,280,000 VND was raised for the central Vietnam flood appeal.  Congratulations to the Y6 team for hosting such a successful event!

Student Leadership

This week has been a time to show and share our gratitude to our student leadership teams. This started on Monday when the Student Council met me in my office to share their achievements and reasons for wishing to work hard as a member of our student council. They were served a cup of hot chocolate as a token of appreciation whilst we discussed and shared our thoughts. Many of our reps shared that they liked being a Student Council Representative because it gave them the opportunity to improve the school and make it a fun place to be, ensuring their friends are happy. They also liked the fact that they can be a good role model to their peers as a Student Council Representative. The reasons they gave highlighted our important characteristics of our aide memoire, ‘Care’, ‘Reflection’ and ‘Integrity’, which is so encouraging to observe in our leaders of tomorrow.

BVIS HCMC Primary Student Council 2020 - 2021

On Friday, the thanks to our other student leadership groups continued with our House Captains, Curators, Community Leaders and Digital Leaders joining together to enjoy hot chocolate with Ms Laura, Ms Nga and Ms Hannah, the teachers who support and guide our student leaders.

EYFS Sing-a-Long

On Tuesday, our youngest children in the school and their teachers took to the stage to put on magical taste of Christmas. The children danced and sang their hearts out, displaying the joy that Christmas brings. Not only had they spent time learning the lyrics and matching actions to these, but they had also been busy in their classrooms creating Christmas decorations that sparkled so brightly in the lights.  They were joined by Y1 and Y2 children in the audience, which was a perfect way to celebrate their performance. Well done to all the children and teachers for helping us all to get ready for Christmas – the season really is upon us!  If you missed the live event, revisit the Microsoft Teams link that was shared on ClassDojo to watch the show.

EYFS Renovations

Lastly, as a reminder over the Christmas holiday we will be seeing some exciting and innovative changes being made to our Early Years areas. This is a project that has been planned carefully over the past year and will be implemented in phases. Ms Becks and her team have spent time researching and carefully considering the optimum environment for learning and development for our children in the Early Years.

‘Enabling Environments’ is a core area of our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. It involves consideration of how to engage and inspire each child through play to ensure they have optimal opportunities for learning, development and success. Our new environment will provide even better opportunities for every child in the Early Years.

As you arrive back in January you will see a different set up to our shared indoor spaces with the ELC transforming into an “Oasis” providing an outdoor feeling indoors, and a unique dedicated space for our youngest Fundinotots families.

If you would like to know more, then we are happy to share, just ask! You can read further about how our EYFS curriculum for our youngest children at this link.

Upcoming Events

  • 15/12/20 @ 11:30am – Term 1 Ends
  • 06/01/21 @ 08:25 – Term 2 Begins

Wishing you a restful weekend.

Secondary Update BVIS HCMC

Mr Jack Rudin, Head of Secondary

The BVIS community has really shown how we can bounce back from a challenging time after the restrictions that were placed on us all this year due to COVID 19.

Our students and staff have returned with energy and enthusiasm and embraced the opportunities at School. Our student Council have flourished this year and organised a remarkably successful Halloween week, worked on a worry box for students to express their concerns, and the environment committee is currently working on a way to reduce the CO2 output of the school.

Our students have been working hard on their studies and making excellent progress. Year 11, 12 and 13 have their mock examinations when they return from the holiday. It is important that they work over the holiday to prepare for these and to consolidate the knowledge from this term that they will need in their summer IGCSEs, AS and A Level examinations. It is also important though that they set aside some time for relaxation and to refresh themselves. They will not perform well in their exams if they are tired and stressed, so a programme of revision combined with periods of relaxation and exercise are important.

Well done to everyone for all the hard work and enthusiasm during this first term - enjoy your break whatever you are doing.

Maths Year 9 & 10 Competition

Ms Marsh took 8 students from Year 9 and 10 to represent BVIS at the Saigon Intermediate Logic competition last weekend, and had an exciting time solving many different questions that really stretched their knowledge and ability! We are really pleased to announce that our team of Year 9 students; Duong Ai Nhu, Ngo Cam Phong, Lam Ngan Nhi, Le Ngoc Nhu (Kathy), finished 3rd in the passback round! This was a great achievement as they were largely competing against students who were older than them! We are incredibly pleased with their achievements and enormously proud of them all.

Back in November, our KS5 Mathematics students took part in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Maths Challenge. This was an enriching, extra-curricular opportunity which encouraged mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. We were incredibly pleased to receive the results this week where over 44% of our students received a bronze, silver, or gold certificate! This is a fantastic achievement, and we are enormously proud of all our extremely hard-working students. Well done KS5!

This week has seen the first set of merit commendations given out. Students across school have received bronze awards for receiving 50 merits so far the year, silver awards for 100 and even some students receiving gold awards for receiving 150 merits already this year! We have seen a real push this year in students receiving merits and they all deserve a massive well done! Keep up the good work!
