BHIKs BVIS Students Project (2)

BHIKs Project - Leading hearing-impaired Children out of their comfort zone through instilling a passion for Basketball

The project, Basketball for Hearing Impaired Kids (BHIKs)  was founded by Phuc Nguyen (BVIS Alumnus, Class of 2021) and Tu Nguyen (BIS HCMC Alumna, Class of 2021) who are passionate about basketball and have great empathy towards children with specific learning needs.

Since its official establishment in September 2020, the project has created a rare playground for the kids and contributed to raising social awareness and reinforcing the message that there are no boundaries in sports.

One of the two project founders, Phuc Nguyen added full of wit “I am determined to transform my failures (as a basketball player) to create success amongst these children with their basketball.”

BHIKs attracts the enthusiastic participation from many active children from schools in HCMC, including BVIS HCMC and BIS HCMC. The project has shared a collaboration with Hear. Us. Now (a project with the mission to bring equal learning opportunities to the deaf community in Vietnam) to organise free basketball training for hearing impaired kids who love this sport.

The objective of BHIKs was helping hearing impaired kids access to basketball, thus developing their basketball community in Vietnam. Tu Nguyen, Co-Founder

Furthermore, BHIKs made the effort in diversifying the activities to inspire and encourage their learners to interact, learn and improve their basketball skills. Recently, BHIKs arranged for their leaners to watch a professional basketball league as well as a friendly match with Saigon Heat Basketball Team. Up to the complicated COVID-19 situation, BHIKs planned to organise the Break the Silence event in September 2021 to raise funds from the entry fee tickets. The money raised will be used for purchasing basketball equipment for children across HCMC who are hearing impaired, as well as funding project activities in the future.

Although it has not been run for a long time, BHIKs has received positive feedback from the trainees and their parents. The training sessions not only equip them with playing techniques but also bring many positive emotional changes. “Refreshing”, “optimistic”, “excited, loving life”, “the more I play, the more I like it”, “after playing basketball, I am so much happier” are what the players often share after each session. In appreciation for BHIKs’ enthusiasm and efforts, some parents made small gifts to motivate the volunteers and their children.

The children also made friends with their volunteers. This is also part of BHIKs key objectives: leading the youngsters out of their comfort zone and connecting with the surrounding community. Besides making a positive impact on the hearing-impaired community, BHIKs is also a meaningful experience that helps broaden one's perspectives, to cultivate empathy, appreciation to little things, and develop key skills such as leadership or communication for BVIS students who participate in the project.

BHIKs BVIS Students Project (3)

BVIS students are encouraged to participate in volunteering activities under detailed guidance of the school to learn the values of integrity, empathy, respect and truly live up to these to become responsible, global citizens. The impact from their own efforts and initiatives brings students a sense of pride and inspires them to confidently discover themselves and be successful in future life.
