As the leaves were starting to change colour and the students were feeling more and more settled in their classes, we thought it was the perfect time to hold ISM’s annual poetry competition!
Linked with the COBIS theme ‘Who am I?’, our Poetry Competition gave the students a brilliant opportunity to think more about themselves and the world around them.
To our pleasure, many students, across our three primary Campuses, penned a variety of fantastic poems. The students blew us away with their use of rhyme, sophisticated vocabulary, their creative ideas and their varying styles and structures. However, there could only be one winner from each campus!
Daniil in Year 6 took the prize at Rosinka. He wrote a superb poem about a walk on an Autumn morning. He used great skill to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.
From Lower Campus, Maria from Year 4 was victorious. Maria considered the thoughts and feelings of a refugee on their journey to a new country. Her thought-provoking piece asked several powerful questions and described the young girl’s uncertain future.
Finally, from Upper Campus, Matrona (Year 6), wowed the judges with an outstanding poem about experiencing kindness and sadness in her soul. She also considered her soul’s destiny and the challenges it may face in the future. In addition to this, Matrona’s piece has been chosen to compete internationally, in the esteemed COBIS Poetry Competition. Her entry will be judged by a panel of teachers and literature professionals, including guest judge, Ali Al-Jamri, a professional poet. Good luck, Matrona!
Matrona's poem is below:
Who am I?
Who am I?
I'm a soul,
A soul that is big,
Bigger than this world,
An endless personality,
A heart that never knew sadness,
But is easy to break
A heart that warms me,
When waves of cold sadness,
Embace me.
A heart that flitters
With every care and love
A heart that beats faster,
When I run to my destiny.
My soul that is loving
loving this world.
