Mathematics, Mental Arithmetic and Rock Stars!

Dear Parents,

At our school, we place great importance on developing children’s mental arithmetic skills, as these form the foundation of success in mathematics. The ability to calculate quickly and accurately in the mind helps pupils build strong number sense, improve confidence, and approach more complex problems with greater ease.

When key facts such as number bonds and times tables are securely embedded, children are able to focus on reasoning and problem-solving to further embed their understanding. The regular practice of mental maths, both in school and at home, is essential in ensuring these skills become automatic and long-lasting.

To further inspire enthusiasm for mathematics, we recently celebrated our exciting Maths Rockstars Day; a huge thank you to Ms. Harris, Mathematics Lead, who coordinated the whole day with support from our Teachers and TLAs.

This vibrant event encouraged children to engage with maths in a fun and meaningful way, with a particular emphasis on times tables fluency. Dressed as rockstars, pupils participated in energetic challenges and collaborative activities that promoted speed, accuracy, and teamwork.

As a finale, we held our exhilarating TTRS Live Battle with all the children who were the fastest in their classes to compete for the title of ‘Times Table Rock Star – 2026’. Please do join me to congratulate Jiwan, 4D who is our electrifyingly fast ‘Times Table Rock Star – 2026’.

The day not only strengthened essential skills but also helped foster a positive and confident attitude towards mathematics, supporting our aim to make every child a successful and enthusiastic learner.

Mrs Harris (Maths Coordinator)

In the lead up to Maths Rocks Day our FANTASTIC student leaders spent weeks creating and preparing an Escape Room for Y4-Y6. They carefully constructed questions using different topics from each year groups and thought of inspirating ways to present the questions and their ‘escape’ materials. The students created all of the materials, organised a locked box with a challenging code and even thought of how to present the room – creating lots of appropriate confusion! This was a completely student led activity.

Hear what they had to say:

Charlotte (Year 6 Maths Leader) – ‘What a wonderful week it’s been! This year for Math Rocks Day we decided to make an escape room for the first time. It was a very fun and memorable experience! We first had to plan the escape room and combine our ideas to create this amazing escape room. We hope everyone enjoys it!’

Advik (Year 6 Maths Leader) - ‘We thought of a hints bag which included some more details about how to escape. We also thought that the questions should be stuck on to the bag but actually we made it all around the room which was harder for them because every question is stuck around the room so they wouldn’t know where to start. There is also a leader board we thought of after we got all the materials.’

Glafira (Year 6 Maths Leader) – ‘The escape room is a fun and challenging room with clues being maths questions. There is a leaderboard for the fastest group and a hints bag for the children and an answer sheet for teachers if we (being the maths leaders) are not in there.’
