Music: Exploring core works

Primary School students are diving into Juilliard Composers and core works while the High School Music ECAs are seeing record numbers.

Primary School Music

We are getting really into our Juilliard Composers and core works this term! Reception have been exploring Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and have looked at long and short sounds within Beethoven’s famous motif. They have now composed their own long and short pieces, created long and short sounds to match and performed using long and short body movements.

This week Year 4 improvised a battle soundscape using the keyboards and then compared their battle sounds with those of the Pipa player, Wu Man, from China. Year 2 have been getting to know the musical worlds of two characters from Mozart’s Opera, The Magic Flute. They described the music of both Papageno and Sarastro, and then drew their own imaginative pictures of how these characters might look on stage. Year 1 were excited to learn one of George Gershwin’s songs this week. They have been singing “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” using different vocal timbres. Year 3 have explored phrases by learning a section of one of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites. They changed the dynamics, tempo and timbre of their voices to create contrast between the phrases.

Last week our High School Music ECAs began and what a great start it was. We have our biggest ever orchestra as well as our excellent choir and Jazz Band! It was fantastic to see so many new faces in attendance. Well done to everyone involved and please encourage your children to be involved with Music ECAs. We always welcome more.
