High School: Democracy in Action

Each Friday lunchtime over 50 High School students, from Year 7 to Year 13, meet in 3d Gold as the Student Leadership Team. Led by two Year 13 students, Tejale and Oonita, they discuss a variety of different issues in the High School, and what we can do to make the High School a little bit better every week - see last week’s discussion of kaizen.

After several weeks discussing the Canteen - it was the Student Leadership Team who planned both the initial Year group rota and the shift to the current queuing system - the students are now beginning to work in smaller groups on a variety of different projects. In the near future, the Student Leadership Team will also be working on how we can create a very visual reminder, or reminders, of our What Makes a Great St Andrews Community values.

Another group working together to make the High School a little bit better every week, and another part of our Great St Andrews Community, are the PTG’s High School Focus Group, shown below, who I met with both last week and in this morning’s first PTG meeting of this academic year. As you can see, the PTG’s High School Focus Group have sons and daughters in five different High School Year Groups, and they would be great people to contact if you have any questions or ideas about how we can all work together to keep improving the High School.

I am looking forward to working with both of these groups, and with all the other students and parents who have ideas and questions for them, as the school year continues.

While the PTG are a very valuable route for communication between parents and the school, please remember that your son/daughter’s Tutor is also a very important contact, and that you can always e-mail OfficeHS@standrews.ac.th if you have a question and you are unsure who the best person is to ask.

In June, Simone (School Counsellor) and I held a PTG Coffee Morning to discuss a number of different current issues related to parenting teenagers in Bangkok, and a number of parents asked for a further meeting to discuss Social Media, and this is taking place tomorrow morning. Please e-mail Simone if you would like to attend and have not yet let Simone and Amy (High School Counsellor) know.

Finally, on Wednesday last week the Primary and High School Offices e-mailed parents about arranging for the flu vaccine to be made available to our community at the Primary School (Sukhumvit 71) on Friday November 17th. Please complete this Google Form if you are interested: https://goo.gl/forms/Ta9kT2YWzTOkEedS2. If you are also a Primary parent, you only need to complete one of the Primary and High School Google Forms.

International Peace Day

Last Thursday, 21 September was International Peace Day. To raise awareness of this important day and celebrate the openness and diversity readily apparent to anyone who visits St Andrews International School Bangkok, our Year 11 students organized two separate events throughout the day.

During break time, an impromptu Flash Choir of Y11 students came together to sing Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World”. Later on, during the latter half of lunch break, students aimed to create the newest entry in the Guinness Book of World’s Records: “The World’s Most Diverse Conga Line”.  Let’s hope that the Guinness committee accepts our students’ accomplishment.
