English is a popular and well-established subject at St. Andrews and we are looking for an experienced teacher to join the team to cover a Maternity Leave. Class sizes are small and the students are motivated and enthusiastic, enjoying a lively approach to the subject through a wide range of teaching and learning techniques and speaking and listening, reading and writing tasks. The ideal candidate will convey enthusiasm for the subject and contribute collaboratively in the continued development of the curriculum from Year 7 to Year 13. A two-year contract, beginning in August 2019, may also be available to an appropriately qualified candidate.
English is taught to all students throughout the High School, with Key Stage 3 schemes of work based on the National Curriculum and leading to both IGCSE English Language and IGCSE Literature in Years 10 and 11. We aim, as far as possible, to include even students with significant EAL needs in this, though schemes of work for some groups may be adapted and some students will receive more intensive EAL support at times through our English+ programme. Some of these students may also take IGCSE English as a Second Language in Year 11.
In Key Stage 5, all students must study at two languages as part of the IB Diploma Programme, with most students taking either English Literature or Language and Literature at Higher or Standard Level, though some students study their first language and English Language B at Higher or Standard Level. Experience teaching either English Literature or Language and Literature at IB would be advantageous. We would, however, also welcome applications from those newer to the teaching profession - St Andrews would be a great school to develop as a professional early in your career.

Experience of teaching children with dyslexia, mild autism, ADHD etc. would be very good prior experience for a teacher wishing to join our team. All English classrooms have data projectors, interactive whiteboards and access to the internet, and there is a strong commitment to integrating the teaching and use of ICT skills into all areas of the curriculum, where appropriate, with laptop carts, iPads and ICT labs bookable when required. As well as their teaching, all teachers are also expected to contribute positively to both the school’s pastoral systems and the extra-curricular programme, offering an Extra-Curricular Activity that either supports or extends the students’ learning in their subject area, or from another area of personal interest.
