Sport: Hard work paying off for our Flames teams

St Andrews International School Bangkok sports teams are as busy as ever with football, tennis, basketball and swimming competitions this week. Our Flames continue to impress.

Primary School Sport

We have had another busy week with football, swimming and tennis. All our Primary football teams were in action in their respective TISAC festivals. These festivals involve several games and are great for the children to get more game experience. Both the boys teams had children who have yet to play for STA so these games were a valuable experience for them on their football journey. At the weekend we had two events with the ANS Titans swim meet and the U11 BISAC Tennis tournament.

Football

Our Primary teams were all in action last week starting their first TISAC festivals. Our girls teams continue to improve and play some lovely football. Our U9 go into their second festival needing to win all their games to win the league. Our U11 girls, after becoming the Harrow International 7s Champions, won all their games and look confident going into future tournaments. Our U11 and U9 Boys B teams both fared well against A team opposition and should be encouraged going into their next festival. It was great to see children that have not yet played for STA get some game experience and score a few goals.

Swimming

There were some impressive performances from our Marlins swimmers at the ANS Titans swim meet at the weekend. The swim team were very happy with the children’s efforts with lots of personal bests and podium finishes. There is a busy period of swimming coming up with 3 swim meets in March.

Tennis

It was great to see our Primary children in action @ the STA Invitational. Over 70 children from different schools in Bangkok came to play and produced some great tennis. The STA players performed well and made 2 semi-finals, with both children unlucky not to reach the final. Tennis has been one of the developing sports this year and it will continue to grow with more coaching and opportunities for our children, especially at the Primary level.

FOBISIA Training

After the half term break there will be a change to the FOBISIA training:

  • Wednesday: Year 6 Teeball
  • Friday: Year 4/5 Athletics

Training will start from the first week back after half-term.

In term 3 training will change again with the Games edging closer and closer.

Term 3 Training:

  • Wednesday - All FOBISIA SQUAD (Years 6,5,4) on athletics. This will give all children a chance to work on their athletic events.
  • Friday - All FOBISIA SQUAD (Years 6,5,4) on Teeball at Arsenal training facility Pridi Soi 21. We normally only do this a couple of times before FOBISIA, but this time we will be better prepared with playing time on bigger Teeball pitches.

If you have any questions in the meantime please email Mr Damon (damon.se@standrews.ac.th">damon.se@standrews.ac.th)

School Online Communication System - SOCS

We’re very excited to announce that we are now using a new online system to help coordinate our busy sports schedule. The SOCS programme is used by many large schools around the world and is essential to us in moving to full BISAC membership in the near future.

The system allows us to input all team data and details of each fixture. There is a calendar, the option to upload photos from games and there are maps to many of the venues. Training schedules and changes to training can be accessed on the site.

The site is open for players and parents alike to check rosters, schedules etc. It is a great tool for communication between coaches, players and parents, though unlike the current system, the emphasis will be on parents and players to be proactive in checking the site, rather than awaiting emails from coaches!

We will still need to communicate via email for transport requirements for the time being.

We are in the process of building the database of information to make the site fully functional, but it is essentially up-and-running and you may access it using this link.

We recommend that you visit the site and familiarise yourself with it. If you have any feedback, please let either damon.se@standrews.ac.th">Mr Damon or ollie.fa@standrews.ac.th">Mr Ollie know.

By August, we hope everyone will be ready to use SOCS to follow the action!

Basketball Camp

Our Term Break Basketball Camp is back after all the building work over previous holidays. We’re offering Primary sessions (Y3-6) at our High School campus, Monday 19-Friday 23 February.

Please log onto Moodle and look for the sign-up in the left hand menu.

This is a great opportunity for our STA children to stay active and to build on their skills during the break.

Saturday Programme and Outside Opportunities

Our Saturday Programme continues to grow with so many great sporting options for our children. It is great that STA students can come to the Primary School and keep active over the weekend and have fun with their friends playing sport. On Saturday mornings we have gymnastics, girls football, yoga, Club Basketball and our Flames Basketball Academy. Currently, we are looking at opportunities to extend the football so that all of our children have the chance to play football at the weekend. We are also trying to encourage more children to join up for endurance events that take place specifically for children at the weekends. If you would like to know more about our Saturday program please email Mr Damon (damon.se@standrews.ac.th">damon.se@standrews.ac.th) or to enquire about the endurance events, please email Khun Seung (seung.sa@standrews.ac.th">seung.sa@standrews.ac.th).

Flames 3on3 Basketball Invitational

On Saturday, 10 February, we hosted our first invitational basketball tournament. With teams from some of the strongest schools and clubs on the circuit, it promised to be a top-notch event full of great bball and we think it lived up to the expectation! We had a buzzer-beaten by our very own Bjorn to win a tight group game (he also won the boys’ skills challenge) and our girls narrowly missed out on the championship despite having a chance to tie the game up at the end. The boys lost their final on the last shot of the whole tournament, but narrowly losing to two academy teams is nothing to be ashamed of!
