High School: Another hands-on week in Tanzania

Mr Roo accompanied our senior students on their trip to Tanzania. Read on for excerpts from his diary outlining the exceptionally exciting and rewarding time they have had... Also, some information about this year’s Global Challenge and NAE-UNICEF Student Summit.

Mr Roo’s Tanzania Diary (Part 2)

Friday 2 March

After two great days of service work, we headed on our safari. We spent the morning travelling across Northern Tanzania, through Maasai land, to Tarangire National Park and spent the afternoon enjoying the beautiful scenery and spotting a wide range of animals - you will have to look carefully in some of these pictures. That night we camped in the National Park, going to bed early to be ready for an early start the following morning.

Saturday 3 March

We woke up at 5.00 a.m. for a long morning in Tarangire National Park, but it was well worth it, seeing more lions, as well as giraffes and hundreds of elephants. In the afternoon, we headed back to Shamba Kipara, via some souvenir shopping and some fantastic views of Mount Meru.

Sunday 4 March

After two amazing days of safari it was back to service work,  with a great day of bricklaying, plastering and other work around the Seeway Community Nursery School building site, with all the students impressing the Seeway staff with their commitment, and a fun lunchtime football match.

Monday 5 March

Our final day of service, with more bricklaying, plastering and lots of heavy rock carrying. Unfortunately, both the lunchtime football match and this afternoon’s work were interrupted by torrential rain.

Tuesday 6 March

Our last day in Tanzania was a day of packing up and reflections on the week, before we headed back to Bangkok, via Zanzibar and a very wet Nairobi.

I was very proud of the St Andrews students in my group, both because of their personal reflections, shared during the Group’s final review sessions, and because of the praise they received from both teachers from the other NAE schools that we worked with and the NAE/Shamba Kipara Camp staff.

It was a fantastic week, but now the students need to return to their fundraising activities and raise the remainder of their $300 per person. Now that they have seen exactly where that money is going, and how much it is helping the local communities, then I am sure that they will be even more inspired to do this.

We are already starting to plan next year’s Tanzania 2019 Expedition. More details coming soon...

While we were in Tanzania, we received confirmation that there will be another NAE-UNICEF Student Summit in New York in July this year, with two St Andrews students following in the footsteps of Arnav, Lucy and Oonita (pictured below at UNICEF's headquarters) who attended this event last summer.

In a special Assembly for Years 10-12 this morning I introduced this year’s Global Challenge, focused on Global Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). I have since placed a number of resources that students can use as they start to think about this year's Global Challenge, including a letter to parents, in a file on the school’s Google Drive, which I have shared in an e-mail to all Year 10, 11 and 12 students.

Any students who are considering entering this year’s Global Challenge, who would like to be considered to represent St Andrews at this year’s UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, should ask their parents to complete the reply slip on the Global Challenge and Global Summit 2018 Letter and return it to Mr Roo by Friday 16th March.
