Key Stage 2: Expo, Wat Po and the Chocolate Factory

Students celebrated their learning and progress at the Year 3 Expo...Meanwhile, Year 6 students paid a visit a to Wat Po...Year 5 topped off their week with a dream-like trip to a chocolate factory… Choose Kind Week kicks off, but in a nice way.

Year 3 Expo

Last week Year 3 had their Expo. This was a celebration of their learning journey in Year 3 and highlighted the huge progress the students have made since joining KS2. There were two sessions for parents, both of which began with Brazilian samba drumming, a Boomwhacker orchestra and a song all about Ancient Greece.

The parents then had a chance to walk around the exhibitions in the classrooms and shared areas and see the students’ work.

Year 6 Trip to Wat Po

Last week the year 6 children went to Wat Po for a tour of the temple and to carry out as survey of tourists. For many, it was the first time that they had visited one of Thailand's most impressive and oldest temples. The guides were very informative and the children really enjoyed learning about the history of the temple. We also had a chance to find out about why so many tourists are attracted to Thailand as well as what they thought of the temples and the food. Their responses were overwhelmingly positive (although some people felt that some Thai food is too spicy!) and it was great to hear tourists complimenting the children on their manners and behavior! We also had time to complete some great observational drawings in the temple grounds.

Year 4’s Chocolate Factory visit

Last week, Year 4 visited a local chocolate factory as part of their current 'chocolate' topic. The purpose of the trip was to see, at first-hand, the processes that are used to turn a cocoa bean into a form of chocolate.

The children began the day with a tour throughout the factory. While on the tour, we were able to see chocolate shavings being produced as well as chocolate football boots to celebrate the upcoming World Cup.

It was extremely interesting to see the many moulds they use to create chocolate of all sorts of shapes and sizes!

Mr Francoise shared with us his knowledge of the different processes used to create prints on chocolate and how the different colours can be applied. After sharing this knowledge his also allowed us to try some of the delicious chocolate made in the factory.

As part of our visit to the chocolate factory, we learned more about the history of chocolate and its origins with the Mayans and Aztecs!

It was a very interesting experience to visit the factory, and here is what some of the year 4 children had to say:

I especially liked looking around the factory, we were allowed to see how they make different types of chocolate and also east some of it? Saeka, 4K
I learned that they used moulds to shape the chocolate, and that some rooms did not have to be as cold as others. Chanya, 4K
I learned that white and dark chocolate have to be kept in different room temperatures. I enjoyed everything in the chocolate factory!

Choose Kind Week

Choose Kind week got off to a great start today. Some students are already proudly wearing “I Choose kind’ stickers which they received for displaying that they are a great member of the St Andrews Community. Lots of Year 3 students turned up to play Kahoot and earn House Points at morning break and an even bigger crowd of Y5 & Y6 students turned up to watch Wonder at lunchtime.
