High School Sport: Making our mark at FOBISIA

Our Flames teams competed in swimming, athletics, football and basketball in the U13 FOBISIA event held at Thanyapura, Phuket...We salute the strength, success, and ever-growing confidence of our STA Girls’ Squads...A special note of gratitude to our Flames Parents...Our Flames Tennis Team continued their winning ways at the FOBISIA Tournament in Delhi...Congratulations to our Marlins swimmers in the BISAC Swimming Championships this past weekend.

U13 FOBISIA

Our U13 team spent last week at their Games at Thanyapura, Phuket.

Day 1: Swimming and Athletics

We put in a solid performance in the pool with some good finishes and amassed enough points for third overall. Our strongest swimmers are mostly U12, so they did well compared to some of the older swimmers from other schools.

In the Athletics, we saw at least three new school records set on the way to a Runners-up team position. We had a lot of high places, performing particularly well in the High Jump, 1,500m & 200m.

Day 2: Girls Football, Boys Basketball

Our girls were unbeaten through the day and went into their final game in top spot. Conceding an early goal was hard on the nerves, but we scored two beauties late on to win the title in style! This was a great team performance marked by some good control, excellent passing and an amazing spine to the team.

The boys also entered their final game unbeaten. Despite leading for three quarters, the boys let their opponents go on a scoring streak without reply and we were unable to get back into the game. It was a narrow loss, but the boys played some outstanding ball to claim Runners-up position.

Day 3: Girls Basketball, Boys Football

The girls went unbeaten once again, winning their first four games by the mercy rule. The final game was closer, but the girls eased to victory to claim the double.

In the Football, the boys made no mistake and despite some amazing goalkeeping by their opponents, managed to go unbeaten and win the title with some outstanding play from front to back.

What’s become clear is that our teams are now amongst the very best of the best in these sports amongst British international schools in Asia. Whilst this on its own may not be important, it’s evidence of the hard work, commitment and passion that our athletes show in striving to be the best that they can be - and how successful they are at achieving that.

This was another fantastic experience for our kids and it was nice to include several athletes new to the FOBISIA experience. Many thanks to our parent support team who helped out in between the 3on3 Basketball and U13 Games, and who are always on hand when needed. This is always much appreciated by the coaches.

Celebrating Girls in STA Sport

Over the last few weeks, our STA girls have shown how incredible they are. From Gymnastics to Basketball, Football, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, Badminton and Golf, our girls are engaging with confidence and competitive spirit. We have as many girls participating in sport as boys and it’s clear from watching them - and the success that they are achieving on the local, regional and international scene - that they are performing at very high levels.

It’s a particular pleasure to see our girls take on greater leadership through sport as their confidence grows. This has a positive impact on the way that they engage with boys and the way that boys begin to interact with female leaders. This is something we hear a lot about in the media and we’re working to develop these important life skills through sport at STA.

Parents in STA Sport

It is an absolute pleasure to see so many of our parents attending sports events, supporting not only your own children, but their teammates and coaches too.

We all appreciate this support, particularly as it is always given in the Flames spirit of sportsmanship and respect. As coaches, we have all witnessed support that interferes with coaches or is distracting to athletes and sometimes intimidating. We can be proud of the way that STA parents conduct themselves - it helps us all focus on being successful in sport and having fun!

Thank you from all of the STA coaches.

Tennis

An action packed week for the STA tennis team with our U15 girls in action in some hard fought matches and a trip to New Delhi for the annual FOBISIA event.

It has been great to see the continued growth and progress of our team as we are continually exposed to more and more competitions. A special well done to Yuzu for finishing 4th overall in the FOBISIA U13 Girls Singles event, even more impressive as she is still in the U11 age category!
