Key Stage 2: Welcoming families and staff

STA welcomes all families and staff as we begin the 2019-2020 academic year.

Welcome back to the new school year

We hope everyone has had a very relaxing break and that you are ready for another exciting year at St Andrews International School Bangkok. We would also like to welcome any new families to our community and hope you enjoy being part of our school. Over the summer there has been a lot of work taking place to ensure the campus is ready for another busy year. We have also been joined by some new teachers in Key Stage Two and have a new member of staff working across the whole campus overseeing all of our learning support services. Mrs Verity is our new SENCo who will help organise our learning support programs, including our STARs program and therapy services. We have four new full time members of staff- Ms Alisah and Ms Jess who are both in Year 3, Ms Katie H. who is working in Year 4 and Ms Katie O. who is working in Year 6. Mr James will be working in Year 4 while Ms Sam goes on maternity leave. They are starting the Year working alongside each other.

We’ve also had some movement within the existing team as Mr Ewen moves to Year 4, Mrs Leanne and Mr Dai move to Year 5 and Ms Sarah moves into Year 6. Mrs Kat and Mrs Nicola take on new roles as year Leaders in Years 4 and 5 respectively.

As Mrs Carys left the school at the end of the school year, Mrs Caroline will be stepping into the role of Key Stage Two Learning Support Coordinator. She will be leading the team of learning support teachers and learning support assistants in Key Stage Two and will be working closely with her counterpart in Key Stage One. If your child is already receiving support from this department or is someone who may need support from this department, Mrs Caroline will be in touch soon. In the meantime, should you wish to contact Mrs Caroline, you can contact her using this email address: caroline.ke@standrews.ac.th.

Training Sessions for New Parents

Moodle and SeeSaw - Mr Keith and Mr Jose will be running two training sessions introducing new parents, or anyone who needs a refresher, to our virtual learning environment- Moodle- and SeeSaw, a tool used to enhance student engagement, promote oracy and provide a digital portfolio which can be shared with parents. These will take place on Wednesday 28th August and Friday 30th August at 8 am in the Drama Studio.

Bug Club - Directly following the Friday session for Moodle and SeeSaw (30th August), we will be holding a Bug Club training session. Bug Club is an online, whole-school reading programme that helps transform children into lifelong readers. Mrs Leanne- our literacy coordinator, will lead you through how to help your child use the platform and increase their love of reading.

Meet the Year Group and Meet the Teacher

In the second week of term, you will have the opportunity to attend some information sessions called Meet the Year Group. In these, you will find out more about the curriculum in your child’s new year group. This will also include information about the residential trips, which will take place in term 2. This session will begin with a presentation from Mr Paul in the Sports Hall. The first session on Tuesday 27th August is for parents of children in Years 2-4 and starts at 4 pm. There will be an opportunity to visit more than one year group as each year group will present twice. The second session- for Y5 & Y6- will be on Thursday 29th August and starts at 4 pm in the Sports Hall. There will only be one information session as there are no siblings across these two years.

In week three, the week beginning 2nd September, we will be holding some pop-in sessions for parents called Meet the Teacher. This is an opportunity for you as parents to introduce yourselves to your child’s teacher and to share anything that you feel is relevant in ensuring your child has a fantastic year at St Andrews. These 10 minute drop-ins will run from Monday to Thursday from 2.45 pm - 3.45 pm. The learning support teachers and EAL teachers will also be available at these times. They will be in their rooms- S Building floor 2 for EAL and F building (up the stairs beside the nurses’ room) for learning support.

Sun Safety at St Andrews

As a school, we try to educate all of our children about being sun safe. As such, children are required to bring a hat to school each day and must wear this when they go out to play. To ensure that children get into the routine of wearing a hat, they must take one put to play even if it is not sunny on a particular day. We also encourage the children to regularly drink water during the school day. To make this easier, and to reduce waste, we recommend that the children each bring a water bottle to school with them.
