High School: Back to school?

We are very much looking forward to having the students safely back in school. Once the MOE and OPEC have reviewed our plans and inspected our two campuses, they will then approve our reopening. We hope that this will be soon! Over the weekend, it was great that our first group of students with underlying conditions were vaccinated at MedPark. Thanks to your responses to our Health Declaration Form and our COVID Vaccination Status survey, we can see that many more High School students are already vaccinated. Finally, you will be making important decisions soon for IGCSE and IB Options, so here are some more details….

Back to School?

While we have all been very impressed with the students’ engagement in their lessons over the last four weeks, we are very much looking forward to having the students back in school as soon as possible.

As Mr Paul says in his Head’s Lines, we are currently making preparations to submit our reopening plans to the MOE and OPEC. Once they have reviewed our plans and come and inspect our two campuses, they will then approve our reopening. We hope that this will be in the near future.

As we prepare to reopen, it is important that we have accurate data on parents’ and students’ vaccination status. It is great news that our first group of students, with underlying conditions, were vaccinated at MedPark over the weekend, and we know from parents’ responses to our Health Declaration Form and our COVID Vaccination Status survey that many more High School students are already vaccinated. We hope that another groups of students will be vaccinated at MedPark soon, and are also in discussion with the BMA about other opportunities for 12-18 year olds to be vaccinated. Please ensure that you have completed our Health Declaration Form and our COVID Vaccination Status survey, and that you update these if anything changes.

Mr Paul also outlines some of our planning, including the requirement for students to have a negative ATK test before coming to school each Monday and Wednesday morning.

Many of our other plans will be very similar to those when we reopened in June and August 2020 and February 2021, ensuring both that we meet or exceed all MOE, BMA and MoPH standards of hygiene, social distancing and mask-wearing and that any students not in school will be able to continue to learn through the Virtual School, with lesson details for every lesson shared via Moodle and absent students also involved in lessons, via Google Meet etc., as much as possible.

We will share updated plans with all High School parents and students as we get closer to reopening.

IGCSE and IB Diploma Programme Options

In last week’s Newsletter, I introduced Ms Alyssa and Mr Rob, our two new Careers and Higher Education Counsellors, who are already working, with Mr Will (Deputy Head: Senior Studies/IB Diploma Coordinator), Ms Nikki (Head of Year 13) and our team of 20 Senior Studies Tutors, with our Year 13 students as they research and apply for universities around the world.

Ms Alyssa and Mr Rob will also be working with younger students and their families, especially Year 9 and 11 students later this term as they start to make their (I)GCSE and IB Diploma Programme Option Choices.

HS

The IGCSE Option Blocks shown above, for current Year 10 students, show the huge range of possibilities, with 30 (I)GCSE and BTEC subjects and thousands of different combinations of subjects available.

As I explain in this video, I believe that the way in which we work with Year 9 students and their parents to create these Option Blocks each year is an excellent example of our Mission Statement in action, as we meet meet “all the needs of the individual learner” both through the huge range of subjects available, which also inspires students “to be the best they can be”, and through our annual two-stage process.

Each year, Year 9 students choose which subjects they would like to study during Term 1, before we then use these choices to rebuild our Option Blocks, to ensure both that each student can study the combination of subjects that is best for them and that our class sizes in Years 10 and 11 will also allow teachers to meet “all the needs of the individual learner”. Year 9 students then make their final Options Choices towards the end of Term 2.

A similar process takes place each year in Year 11, as the students choose their IB Diploma Programme and BTEC Level 3 subjects - the Option Blocks above show the subjects and combinations available to current Year 12 students.

As you can see from the Calendar below, there are a number of events, for both students and their parents, in the second half of this term to support Year 9 and 11 students in choosing the right combination of subjects for them.

You can read more about our IGCSE programme on our website.
