PTA News

31st May

As we enter the last few weeks of the summer term, it is always satisfying to look back and reflect on just how much has been achieved and the fun that’s been had. A job well done. This has certainly been the case this year and much of that is due to the many volunteers and active members of the PTA. You know who you are!  Whether you’ve run an event or you’ve been part of selling tickets or you’ve helped the Easter Bunny, you have been part of the success of 2018-2019.

Also at this time of year, comes the end of the PTA committee. Come along to the last monthly open meeting (MOM) on Wednesday 5th June. The new PTA committee will officially take over and will be looking for suggestions for the new year as well as volunteers for events.  Don’t be shy, come along for a coffee and a chat with the old and the new!

24th May

Hi all!  As everyone gets busier with end of year exams and activities, the PTA has been getting busy with planning the calendar for the next school year.  We plan to keep the same popular events as in the past, as well as trying to come up with some new ones!  We want to build on the participation and engagement we had this year from our community: parents, teachers and, most importantly, our students.

Don’t forget to come to our last monthly open meeting (MOM) on Wednesday, 5th June.  The new PTA team will officially take over and you can bid farewell to the old team!

10th May

This Wednesday we gathered for the AGM (Annual General Meeting) of the PTA. The agenda covered a 2018-19 review of our school year from a PTA perspective (from PTA Chair and school), including: an income statement review; a discussion and vote on a constitution amendment; the introduction of the new committee.

From the school’s side, Katherine Walker covered some detail on the Parent Satisfaction Survey results. She talked about positive themes and areas for improvement. She thanked the parents for their feedback in order to guide future positive changes. Chris Russell mentioned some of the roles that the PTA has taken on and the activities they have run this year, which has led to an enhancement of the students’ daily experience, parent representatives, charity funding, book fairs and international week. The most recent PTA activity made many children (and staff!) happy on the last day of term before the holiday. Special thanks to the Easter bunny and helpers: Katarina, Akanksha, Yulia and Sophia!  Ben Turner reiterated the supportive role of the PTA and the common goal for all us adults within the school environment being to support the holistic learning experience of the children.

Easter bunny

Last week, by email, we informed you of a proposed amendment to the constitution of the PTA. This amendment was the proposal to change the name of the PTA to PTSA, to include the ‘student’ element as a more active and overt part. There was an engaged discussion around this before a vote was taken. While all seemed to agree that we would like to actively involve the students more, the argument was made that we could do this through a mission statement revision rather than a name change. The subsequent show of hands saw the amendment defeated by one vote, with some members abstaining. The decision was made to look at this in more detail. Ed Salazar pointed out that the constitution states that a special referendum can be held to take a vote rather than needing to wait until the next AGM, so this topic may be revisited before the end of term.

This year the nomination process saw one person put themselves forward for each of the four committee roles of the PTA. As per the constitution if only one nomination is received a vote is not necessary. The new committee introduced themselves: Mohsen Noohi as Chair, Carina Lindkvist as Vice Chair, Alexandra Forgács as Treasurer and Akanksha Sondhi as Secretary. Best of luck to the incoming team for another great year ahead!

3rd May

Next week is the PTA AGM. The biographies of people nominated for the committee positions are below:

Mohsen Noohi – Nominated for Chair

Dear PTA members

Please give me your approval for a second year in the position of the PTA Chair.
My long and varied career includes successes in building and leading large and small multicultural organisations.

In the 2019/20 school year, we will have an experienced and active PTA leadership team with a common purpose. This will help us build on the successes of the past.

If elected as the Chair I intend to build on our progress with a specific focus on:
1. Continue to encourage a wider engagement by parents and teachers with a strong emphasis on the students.
2. Continue to strengthen communication with the school leadership team, to bridge the expectations and realities of the broad educational needs of the students.
3. Make the PTA more inclusive: more parents, more nationalities, more teachers and more students in project management as well as audience participation.
4. Our progress will depend on a strong team spirit.
I will continue to work hard with the other PTA leadership members to ensure that we continue to grow our BISB PTA community spirit.

Thank you for your continued trust.

Carina Lindkvist – Nominated for Vice Chair

I am the mother of two boys, aged 12 and 15.  I have always been part of the PTA at my children’s schools as I consider it very important to further communication between parents and between parents and school, ultimately benefitting our children. Before arriving in Budapest last summer, I was a part of both the PTA (PSG) and the Advisory Board at Quality Schools InternationaI Zhuhai, China.  I hope my experience can be useful to our Chair and the PTA during the next BISB school year.

Alexandra Forgács – Nominated for Treasurer

Dear PTA members

My family and I have been part of this school’s community for 13 years now. From the beginning, I was a very active member of the PTA, not always as a committee member, but always helped, and I am and have been a class representative continuously for the classes of my sons.

For the last 2-3 years, I couldn’t be around as much as I would have liked to, but I did my best.

But now “I am back in business!” so I applied for the position of the Treasurer and I have been nominated to take on the position of the Treasurer.

I am an economist by profession and I used to work in banking and for brokerage firms.

Thank you for your trust.

Akanksha Sondhi – Nominated for Secretary

Since we joined BISB in September of 2018, I have had the opportunity to support the school by being a class representative and volunteering in various PTA activities. It has been a wonderful way to meet other BISB families and stay involved in the education process.

I truly believe that every successful school needs parental support and involvement and I look forward to helping create a stronger parental community through my role as PTA secretary.

Thank you

_____________________________________________________________

12th April

As mentioned over the last few weeks, this week (10th April) saw the last day for the nominations for the four officers of the PTA: the Chair; Vice Chair; Secretary and Treasurer. We have received some nominations already but if anyone is still keen to join the committee please inform us of your interest. At the AGM next month we will inform you of the new PTA team, and vote on any new amendments to the constitution.

2019 BISB Benefit "James Bond" Gala a Success for Our Community

gala

Thanks to the enthusiastic support of sponsors, donors, volunteers, teachers and staff, as well as the many parents and friends who attended the event, our 2019 benefit gala was a huge success. We managed to raise almost 4 million forints for the charities and projects that the PTA supports. This year, we have specifically included in our charitable goals our intention to use these funds to contribute to our students' service learning activities that foster collaboration with the charities we support, and to supplement student facilities that encourage growth and creativity on the school campus. Your consistent support is key to our continued efforts.

This year we were proud to count among our most enthusiastic sponsors, our friends at Wallis Automotive Europe, FirstMed, and the Corinthia Hotel as Platinum Sponsors, the Caledonian Club, Budapest Airport (with LOT Polish Airlines), the Four Seasons Hotel and DePress Printing Services as Gold Sponsors and, as Silver Sponsors, Furstner Dentistry, Baraka Restaurant, and the Marriott Budapest. We are also grateful to His Excellency, Mr Iain Lindsay OBE, British Ambassador to Hungary and Mrs Lindsay for their consistent and active support, and to the more than 30 donors who provided exciting gifts for the raffle. We also could not have done this without the keen support from BISB teachers and staff, particularly the marketing staff.

Those of you who purchased raffle tickets and do not know yet if your winning number was drawn can find the winning numbers posted on our Facebook page as well as on the PTA community board in the Café. Those of you who won auction prizes should note that you have only a few short weeks to collect your prizes, so do please act quickly. Peter Ronaszeki's photos from the event have been posted on our Facebook page for all those interested. Also, we are expecting to circulate soon a link to the photos taken by our friends at XpatLoop. In the meantime, please do not forget to keep in mind the products and services from our sponsors and donors. By giving them your business, we are able to count on their continued support for our PTA activities.

Please remember to let us know about the kind of feedback you wish to receive at our open meetings. We welcome all feedback and ideas. Please use our dedicated PTA email address for any suggestions. pta@bisb.hu">pta@bisb.hu

5th April

As you are all very much aware, this week saw us hold the Forum with the SLT (Senior Leadership Team). This took the form of a presentation under the headlines of British International Education and Assessment, with time included for questions during and at the end of the presentation. Over the past few months we have been collecting questions and topics from parents, and then working with the SLT to focus a discussion under these key headings. We endeavoured to use this opportunity to create a better understanding of the school policies, as well as the topics that are unclear for some parents. There will be future open meetings with more coverage of the topics. Over 90 people attended the meeting, showing an outstanding engagement on the parent side and a good indicator for future open meetings!  Many thanks to Richard, Chris and Ben for making themselves available together for this April MOM.

Don’t forget you still have the chance to put yourself forward for one of the PTA Committee positions for the next school year! The open positions are those of the four officers of the PTA core committee: Chair; Vice Chair; Treasurer and Secretary. If you are interested, please fill in the nomination form. The completed form must then be sent via email to pta@bisb.hu" target="_blank">pta@bisb.hu, or you can hand it in to school Reception before 10th April.

Next week an email will be sent to all parents to ensure that everyone is informed of the nomination and voting process. The four posts to vote on are Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. We will also plan to have an informal coffee morning with current committee members available to answer any questions and to encourage new volunteers for next year. The date is yet to be confirmed but it will be before the Easter break. We also hope that some school committee members will be available too. Please come along with an open mind and in the meantime consider which role you would prefer!

Another reminder not to miss the next MOM: our Forum with the Senior Leadership Team. The Forum has been confirmed as the morning of 3rd April. This meeting with Richard, Chris and Ben will discuss topics that have come directly from parents though year representatives. We can follow up on specific items of interest in future sessions if required.

8th March 2019
What a busy and fun week the first week of March has been. Nobody can have missed that it is Book Week: the school has been a hive of activity for students, teachers and parents!  So many events were planned over the week that the children had something different to look forward to every day. Huge thanks as ever to Nermin for her continued dedication to the book sale and for all the work she has put in behind the scenes over the past months.

On Wednesday we held the February Monthly Open Meeting (MOM). We hope you didn’t miss the POOP and FAHRT awards being given out!  Edith, Sophia and Ben were the worthy winners this time around. Ben then took time out of his busy schedule to give us plenty of detail on Firefly and the vision for its use going into the future. It was a frank discussion on its current use and the vast possibilities for future use. The floor was also opened to parents to ask questions. We ran well over time so thanks again to Ben for facilitating this.

Our next MOM will be another one to mark in your diary. The meeting on 3rd April will be the Forum with the Senior Leadership Team. Following the more casual conversation in February with Richard, Chris and Ben, the Forum will see the SLT discussing topics that have come directly from parents though your year representatives.

pta charity gala 2019

We are also getting closer to the James Bond themed gala dinner on 6th April. Ticket sales begin on Monday 11th March in the Atrium. Raffle tickets will also be available at this time. Tickets will be on sale for two weeks only, so don’t miss out! Volunteers are always welcome to step forward. We are still looking for some volunteers for ticket sales and we would also appreciate helpers on the day with raffle sales, etc.  Please contact Ed or Sophia or email PTA if interested.

Lastly, we want to remind you about some housekeeping rules in relation to our PTA Facebook pages.  Please remember that our BISB PTA Classified page is for promoting your business or selling pre-loved items, this should not be done on the BISB PTA page. 15th February

On Wednesday we held the February Monthly Open Meeting (MOM). It was nice to see so many new faces as well as familiar ones. There was a good turnout this month compared to January. We think the reasons for this were twofold: firstly logistical (there was a lack of snow) and secondly we held the ‘Conversation with the Chair’ (Mohsen’s conversation with Richard Dyer, Chris Russell and Ben Turner). In his opening comments, Mohsen reiterated the aim of the conversation was to get to know the school’s leadership team: how their attitudes were formed, what influences their behaviour, and how this leads to what decisions they make. Mohsen referred to the ABC of leadership: Attitudes, Behaviours and Communication styles that make them the leaders they are. Hopefully you didn’t miss the meeting; it was a lively and engaging one. We found out what led them to pick teaching as a profession and the jobs they almost did. Who planned to be a pilot in the Air Force?  Whose first job was in a computer lab at Oxford?  We learned the panel’s biggest satisfaction in being a teacher; what activities they do in their spare time and what career they would likely be in if it were not teaching. The final part of the discussion was a quick-fire round of fun hypothetical questions including bucket list activities; advice to teenage self; what car they would be; how they would like to be remembered as a teacher. We hope you were there to hear all the answers! If you didn’t make it, talk to someone who did!

As previously mentioned, we also plan to have another panel interview at the April MOM. The guests will be the same but there will be a different focus. The April forum will focus on topics related to school policies. If you want to raise any topics, please do so through your year reps. These points will be summarised and shared with the leadership team in order to get their well thought through feedback.

2019 Gala Quickly Approaching!  Volunteers Welcome! Next meeting Friday 1st March

Our next Benefit Gala is quickly approaching and, while much has already been sorted, we still have much to do to ensure its success. We are grateful to those of you who have already reached out to request vouchers and donations from your favourite merchants, restaurants and services, but we still have far to go to reach our goals. If you can, please continue to reach out during the mid-term break. We need to have auction and raffle items confirmed by mid-March. For more information or to learn more about volunteering for the various activities, come to the next Gala preparation meeting on Friday 1st March, at 2:30pm in the BISB café.

This year's James Bond theme promises to be great fun. Be prepared to come dressed as your favourite Bond character -- hero or villain -- or in the standard Bond black tie attire. Of course, national dress is ALWAYS most welcome, especially at a Bond event. Ticket sales begin on 11th March in the Atrium as usual (20,000HUF each, 15,000HUF for staff, 300,000HUF for a VIP table for 10). If you would like to arrange a table for you and your friends, please feel free to do so. Raffle tickets also will be available (5 for 1,000HUF), as well as instructions for the casino games for those who need a refresher. If you have any questions, please contact Sophia Verykios or Ed Salazar or e-mail the PTA.

8th February

Happy Lunar New Year to all!

As mentioned last week, the Monthly Open Meeting (MOM) for February was moved from the usual first Wednesday of the month to the second, to 13th February. The reason for the change was to ensure full attendance of the panel for our conversation with Richard Dyer, Chris Russell and Ben Turner. Mohsen will be interviewing them and attempting to establish what experiences and values have made them what they are today. As posted on our Facebook page, this will be a rare event: a chance to get to learn about the inner thoughts and souls of the leadership team. They make decisions that affect our children every day. Miss it at your peril!

1st February 2019

Though the start of the year is certainly quieter than before the holidays, we do have a few exciting events coming up soon. February MOM (monthly open meeting) will feature a conversation with the school’s SLT (Senior Leadership Team). It promises to be a fun and interesting chat with the SLT in order to get to know them a little better. Join us on 13th February in the Dining Room at 8:45am.

Following on from this conversation, we plan to have the same panel of guests at either the March or April MOM for a forum. This will see the SLT answer questions on topics which are seen as core issues by the parents. The forum will be held twice on the same day to ensure that as many parents as possible can attend. There will be one in the morning as usual for the MOM and one in the evening. We will update you as soon as possible when we have set the date.

The organisation of the school gala dinner on 6th April continues with Sophia and Ed at the helm. We hope that the British Ambassador will again join us for this annual event. Hopefully, potential volunteers made the afternoon meeting in the BISB café on Friday afternoon!

19th January 2019

Welcome back all!

Despite the return of snowy weather to welcome us back to the new school term, we had a good turnout at the first open meeting of 2019.  Rachel Rhodes and Ben Turner treated us to a refreshing presentation on Service Learning at BISB. For those of you who didn’t brave the weather and stay for our meeting Service Learning is relevant, meaningful service within the community that develops knowledge and understanding of global issues on a local level.  It encourages social and civic responsibility. It also helps develop needed skills and enhances wellbeing and academic learning.  It leads to enhancing our children’s education helping them to become well-rounded citizens of the world.  Through the presentation, we saw various projects at various levels of student ages from Early Years through to Year 13, each level obviously having a different understanding and involvement.

We also had an update from Sophia and Ed on the gala dinner in April.  All is progressing well but as ever volunteers are always welcome!

14th December 2018

So here we are, the last newsletter of the year and the end of the fullest term for the PTA. It has truly been a pleasure to see so many people involved this school year. We have had up to 70 active members involved in our many projects, made up of people from over 40 different nationalities. It’s been busy but fun! We had the Welcome Social in September; the huge involvement in International Week and our Halloween event in October; the November run up to and prep for the huge success that was the 2018 Christmas Fair. Thanks again and looking forward to working with you all in the new year!

With 2019 in mind, there is plenty more to excite and engage. We look forward to more inspiring MOMs in the upcoming months, including forum and conversation with the Senior Leadership Team, which promises to be fun!  We plan to have evening MOMs to ensure to include working parents also. Watch this space for further details.

In the meantime, please take time to enjoy the holiday period with family and friends. We are looking forward to seeing you again in the New Year!

7th December 2018
The busiest term for the PTA is almost over, as is the biggest event on the PTA calendar: the Christmas Fair!  This term we have had much collaboration for all our PTA events: Halloween, Book Fair and Christmas Fair.

The Christmas Fair is the event that requires the most coordination and collaboration between PTA, school, parents and students. Despite road closures out of our control and with no prior notice, this event was a huge success with over 500 visitors! This fair saw the biggest group of volunteers yet coming together to contribute to this success: almost 70 volunteers across 50 different nationalities with many different languages but all with the same mission. There were many things to see, engage in and enjoy. We had big prizes from big brands such as Sony, BMW and Four Seasons. There was a passionate school band playing live music, over 30 vendors with much on offer, reindeer to greet you on the way in and Santa and Olaf wandering around to meet you as you browsed the stalls or tried your luck on the tombola. Please have a look at the list of raffle tickets as there are still some great raffle prizes unclaimed HERE.

What was not as evident on the day was all the hard work that had gone on behind the scenes, all done with a great sense of camaraderie. Teams came together over many weeks including some weekends to plan the event and long hours on Friday to decorate the gym. This planning and preparing went to creating the vibrant atmosphere we all felt at the Christmas Fair. Thank you!

On Tuesday we had the Monthly Open Meeting (MOM). We hope you were there for the presentation from Richard Dyer, Sarah Ford and Louise Russell. The workshop was on how to speak to our children so that they will listen. It was a lively discussion on how to, and more so how not to, speak to our children. It sparked plenty of talking points. Thanks to our speakers for taking time out of their busy teaching schedules to come along to our meeting.

We also heard updates on recent events. In the knitting project sponsored by the PTA, 40 students knit scarves for charities. These were modelled at assembly this week! 1000 books were sold at the Book Fair.  Thanks again to Nermin and Akanksha. Nermin received a BOOKS award for her dedication: Bring, Order, Organise Kickass Sales!  We also had further POOP (Power Of Our Positivity) awards: Monica and Caren being the worthy beneficiaries for their coordination of the Christmas Fair, along with Katherine Walker for her tremendous collaboration from the school side.

Mohsen also updated us on big projects going forward. He met with the Primary school council and they described their wish list, which included improvements to the playground. In Secondary, year reps are collecting information from parents. This will provide questions for the Senior Leadership Team of the school in interviews in a MOM next term.

30th November 2018

What a great week it’s been, full of energy from the PTA community. Thank you to everyone for creating this community spirit around our school!

The Book Fair was such a fun event. It was lovely to see the children’s happy faces as they chose and purchased books. It was also lovely to see the fun parents and teachers had in helping the children choose! The variety and array of books on offer continue to improve.  There were hundreds of titles for all ages and all interests. Huge thanks to our wonderful Nermin for the months of planning, choosing and coordinating and making this event even better than the last one.

Last Saturday, a group of dedicated volunteers came into school to set up Christmas trees and other decorations. Approximately 25 parents and a few students came in and worked to get everything looking just right. The result of this energy, creativity and collaboration is clearly visible around the school. We will need volunteers to bring them down and will announce which day we will need help next week.

Looking forward a little, we have many exciting events coming up. On Tuesday we will have the Monthly Open Meeting (MOM). We are looking forward to being inspired by the presentation from Richard Dyer, Sarah Ford and Louise Russell. The topic is on how to speak to our children so that they will listen. We can all learn more about this important topic! As usual, we will also review recent events and upcoming events. One of the year’s favourite events is the Gala Dinner planned for April. We will soon be bringing volunteers together to brief on how they can contribute. If you are interested please contact Ed, Sophia, Raffaella or Mohsen.

Planning and preparation continue for the Christmas Fair. On Wednesday the final official briefing for volunteers was held and Friday is the beginning of setting up for the event. Did you know we have almost 60 volunteers participating over Friday and Saturday? Thank you in advance for this fantastic response!

Lots of fun and excitement is awaiting the visitors of our Christmas Fair including Santa Claus and reindeer. Don’t forget to buy your tickets and vouchers this week in the Atrium before the weekend and make sure to bring them on the day! Our sponsors have donated some fantastic prizes including a Sony TV, a BMW/Mini foldable bike, vouchers from restaurants and hotels, even the school restaurant!  Perhaps the most fun for the kids remains the Tombola: many, many, many small prizes will be available to be won!

23rd November 2018
The weather may have taken a turn this week, but there is a definite buzz around the Atrium at the moment!  PTA active members have been volunteering at drop-off and pick-up times every day to ensure they are always on hand to sell both entry tickets and raffle tickets for the Christmas Fair on 1st December. Make sure to pop along before the fair to avoid having to queue on the day! There is a great deal on offer: get a free entrance ticket if you buy vouchers now. Plus, please don’t forget to chance your luck on picking your favourite raffle prize!

Our next PTA open meeting is now confirmed for Tuesday 4th December. This break with the traditional Wednesday was to accommodate the schedules of our guest speakers. This meeting promises to be an exciting workshop with contributions from Richard Dyer, Sarah Ford and Louise Russell. The topic should be interesting for any parent: ‘How to talk to your child so they will listen (and listen so they will talk)’.  Please make sure to come along!

16th November 2018

This week saw the PTA active members throw themselves fully into preparation for the Christmas Fair, which will be held on 1st December.  The PTA and the school have been working hard together to create a great Christmas Fair.  Sponsors and vendors have been approached and secured to ensure many exciting prizes and lots of delicious food to eat – watch this space for more details to be revealed closer to the date!  We would still like to call out any able and willing volunteers; it’s never too late!  Please also consider putting yourself forward to help with the gala event on 6th April; it’s never too early!

9th November 2018

Another busy few weeks since our last PTA update!

Our school’s new format for International Week was a resounding success. This year we had a change in the way the international food court was held: rather than a one-day substitution for school lunch, we had parents involved in supplying finger food after students had eaten their lunch. There were over 100 parents in school over the course of the week supplying samples of typical dishes from their country or region. Thirty-four different nationalities volunteered to cook and provide food for the students. These samples supplemented the school provision of a different lunch menu each day of the international week in order to represent the cuisine of the different countries. The food court was definitely one of the elements of International Week that clearly demonstrated diversity to all our children, with the added bonus of tasting lots of delicious food!

Many thanks also to the numerous parents who showcased their countries either in the classroom as individuals or as a group in the exciting assemblies. Children were exposed to Chinese lions and dances, Bollywood dance and yoga! It all came together wonderfully to show what can be achieved with positive collaboration by school and parents alike.

Thanks also to those who volunteered and dressed up at short notice to help with our mini Halloween event on 31st October before the long weekend. Our children were surprised and delighted to receive sweets from some scary parents as they left school on Wednesday!

Our November open meeting was held on Wednesday. It was a busy meeting with lots of updates, both from school and parents. Mr Dyer gave us updates and thanks for international week involvement, and discussed the learning created for our children under the themes of UN Sustainable Development Goals.  He mentioned that it is the 50th anniversary of the IB, and how Sarah Ford participated at a conference in Vienna on restorative practices.  (Sarah is planned to be the speaker at our next open meeting in December, likely to be either the 4th or 5th.)

Mohsen updated everyone on his meeting with parents and the year representatives and on the project management workshop for the active PTA members. Mohsen emphasised the TRUST based relationship that exists between school and PTA active members and how we can manage any difficulties with positive thinking and collaboration. Examples of this solution orientated collaboration were evident in the Halloween and International Week events.

With this in mind, Mohsen presented the first PTA POOP awards of the year! Perhaps not as it first seems, it is genuinely an honour to receive this award as it stands for ‘Power Of Our Positivity’!  Akanksha, Caren and Mr Russell were the worthy recipients this time for their positive collaboration during International Week.

We also received updates on the gala event from Ed and Sophia. Put 6th April in your calendar now! Rita and Monica gave updates on the Christmas Fair which will be held on 1st December this year.  Volunteers for both events are very welcome. There will be organisational meetings for the Christmas fair on 16th and 23rd November at 2pm in the BISB Café. Deadline for any vendors to come forward is this Friday, 9th.  We also encourage any new parents with business connections to consider sponsoring our Christmas Fair and also the gala dinner. Please contact us if you need more info.

19th October

Busy and exciting times for the PTA community continue!

In the last few weeks, we have had discussions on mindfulness and practice, then was the project management principles workshop and now the busiest week of all: international week! It really has been a joy to see the involvement of everyone at BISB: school and staff, students and parents. It has been wonderful to see the fun and rapport created from the food court every day alongside the many parents who came into classes to share elements of their culture. Big thanks to everyone who has volunteered to be involved and make this one of the highlights of the year for our children.

As mentioned last week, there will not be a Halloween party at the school again this year. Recently though we have received suggestions for keeping the spirit of Halloween alive. Two suggestions from the parents were put forward to the school. Dressing up on 31st has not been approved due to safety and logistical reasons but our second suggestion of parent volunteers giving out sweets is likely to happen. We are thinking through the logistics of how to make it happen and of course, we will need volunteers to help with this. Get in touch if you are interested in helping.

12th October

It is an exciting few weeks for the PTA community. We have been planning events and having self-improvement workshops.

Last Wednesday we had the PTA Open Meeting when we celebrated the judging of the Captions Challenge (all participants won a prize) and also learned about Mindfulness and improved our ability to communicate with our family members. This engaging talk was delivered by Anka Mate who is the school counsellor.

At this meeting we also asked for feedback about the kind of inspiring content you wish to receive in the future. We welcome all feedback and ideas. Please use our dedicated PTA email address for any suggestions - pta@bisb.hu

Big thanks to everyone who has volunteered to get involved in one or more aspects of International Week next week: from a story or classroom activity in your child’s class, to performances in assembly, to the International Food Court.  Akanksha and Caren have done a great job of coordinating a new food court concept this year. There are many nationalities providing finger foods from their home countries on each day of the week.  As well as this they have provided the kitchen with recipes to represent different food cultures for the main meal on each day of the week. It promises to be a lot of fun for the kids leading up to our October break!

As you have no doubt noticed on our calendar, there is no Halloween event at the school this year. We would love to hold it again next year, so please do not hold back if you are interested in getting a team together for next year – it’s never too early to start thinking about it!

As you are also probably aware, there has been much discussion since last week’s open meeting about the proposed Christmas Fair date of 1st December as this is a working day in Hungary this year.  We have since looked at changing to 2nd or 8th but there are many other constraints with choosing these dates.  Therefore, we will keep the original date of 1st December. We hope the affected parents will find a way to come join this fun event.

xmas fair 2018

This Wednesday we had a PTA active members team-building and self-improvement event when we worked on Project Management skills and the key pillars of building trust. Mohsen and Heather (who is an experienced project manager as well as wife of a BISB teacher) designed and led the workshop. We had constructive discussions on how we could use the principles to help us in managing many of our PTA activities! This was yet another example of PTA and school members working together for the improvement of the whole community.

Watch this space to see a few photos of the Year 10 dinner for parents organised by our rep for that year group, Edith.  It promises to be a fun evening with good attendance.

We hope to see more of you at our forthcoming events.

Event: The monthly PTA Open Meeting
Date and Venue: Wednesday 3rd October 08:45 Dining Room.
This event is open to all BISB parents and teachers.

Dear Parents,
Our next monthly PTA meeting is here again, and we are very excited about it.
Our objectives for these meetings are simple: to inspire you, to inform you and help you connect to others.
This month in addition to meeting other parents, you will also get updates from the PTA activity leaders and updates about future events.

Perhaps the most fun will be coming from Mohsen’s conversation with Dr Anka Máté
about mindfulness. We all have hectic and stressful lives and so we need tools to help us cope and keep control of our lives. This session will be both informative and practical, and more importantly, it will guide and inspire us to become more active in this important area of self-help in our health.

We will also announce the winners of the caption challenge we had on our PTA page on FB, so we hope all of you will come to see who has won a prize.
We believe you will all be holding your pens horizontally in your mouth. If you don’t understand this comment it is because you probably did not come to our welcome party, and so it is definitely time for you to come to the open meeting next Wednesday.

We hope to see you there fully ready to enjoy yourselves. Get the word out and get more parents to come on Wednesday and be inspired.

14th September

Thanks to everyone who came to the Welcome Social last Friday! It was a fun evening that helped parents and teachers connect in a relaxed atmosphere.

About 135 people from about 40 countries came and enjoyed a variety of drinks, including some wine tasting with Csilla, our sommelier for the evening.

Check out the pictures in our Facebook group and have a go at our caption competition!

Thank you to Raffaella Bruno-Pinto and the PTA events team for organising and running it. We hope for more families to join us in the future. There has been a clear demand to hold more of these types of fun evenings, so watch this space.

15th June 2018

Message to PTA Membership

Dear Parents and Staff

The 2017-2018 BISB academic year has been an enormously successful year for the PTA’s efforts to enhance the quality of our BISB community life as well as the well-being of our students. We all share in this success and we can be proud of it. Our momentum in this regard continues to grow with the school, but our ability to keep pace is only as good as our ability to attract new volunteers.

Of course, the PTA will always need volunteers to help support the fun events we organise for the students, but we also need volunteers to take an active interest in our community life, to share their interests and concerns, and to welcome new families to Budapest.

As we close this academic year and look forward to the 2018-2019 year, please keep the PTA in mind. We are always excited to welcome new people to our Committee team and to our community. Even those who may have little time to spare always have something to share or contribute. Please join us in 2018-2019! It’s going to be a fun year!

We look forward to seeing you at the Open Meeting on Wednesday 20th June at 8:45am. An agenda will be sent out separately

  • Book Fair a HUGE success!
  • The PTA Annual General Meeting is fast approaching!
  • Don’t don’t forget the June Car Boot Sale!

car boot sale

Thanks to Nermin Minessy’s hard work and planning, our Book Fair was an enormous success. Nearly all book categories were sold out. The message from students was clear: we will need MORE books!

The May holidays are nearly upon us, so that gives us little time to plan the 9th June Car Boot Sale. Unfortunately, we have had too little response from parents who may be interested in participating in this annual spring cleaning sale, although we have already heard from many children who are eager to recycle their old toys for a profit. Parents, please let us know by 4th May if you are interested in participating. It will be at the BISB Car Park, 10am-2pm. If many parents sign up, we will work to make this an occasion for a fun family outing. If too few express interest, we may have to cancel this year’s Car Boot Sale. 20 April 2018

Our 2018 Charity Gala was another fun-filled and notable success thanks to the many PTA volunteers, BISB staff and most of all, the generous sponsors and donors who supported our charitable goals. We raised over 5.000.000 HUF during the event! We depend on the support of sponsors and donors for the many activities the PTA organises throughout the year, and we are proud to encourage BISB families to use their products and services whenever possible. Please enjoy the photos of the Charity Gala appearing in the Newsletter.

Also, don’t forget to check your e-mail for news of the upcoming PTA Annual General Meeting and nomination forms for the Core Committee positions. The forms need to be completed before 2nd May.

Other News

November Open Meeting. Among the many items covered at the meeting, we reviewed feedback from International Week and the Food Court and agreed to consider some changes to improve the experience for all students for next year’s event. In preparation for the Christmas Fair, a number of volunteer request lists were circulated, all of which will be posted on the PTA Community Board in the Café in case you would like to add your name. We brought parents up to date on the numerous 25th Anniversary activities being planned, including an international cookbook, a time capsule and timeline project, branded merchandise, and a school song, as well the springtime Gala. Mrs Walker reported that the school uniform supplier will be able to deliver orders, as well as accept returns without charge, although a few issues, such as back orders, and methods of payment are still being addressed.

Tutors and babysitters. Many parents have requested information about tutors, for a variety of subjects, who may be available for their children. While the PTA and BISB cannot endorse any specific tutors, we would like to use our Facebook page as a platform for posting recommendations parents wish to share with others in our community. Don’t forget to use our Facebook page for exchanging information about babysitters as well. Do let us know if you have any to share.

Check out the latest PTA news on our PTA community bulletin board in the cafeteria, which is open to all parents during drop off and pick up times daily.

To learn more about all of our PTA events and activities, please contact us directly at pta@bisb.hu. Also, all parents are encouraged to join our BISB PTA Facebook page for ongoing news, information-sharing, and updates (and coming soon, a classifieds page), at https://www.facebook.com/groups/BISB.PTA/.  The PTA is committed to the well-being and education of our BISB children, and to enriching the school experience for all in the BISB community, including parents, teachers and students. We organise a variety of social, fund-raising, and other events that embrace our international setting, build bridges within our community, and help to create a mutually supportive environment.
