PTA News

19th June

Dear BISB parents, teachers, staff and students.

It is the end of my term as the PTA Chair and I wish to give a brief review.

Two years ago we agreed these priorities for the PTA committee:

1- Focus on the students’ broader education needs.

2- Connect the school and home life for the students.

3- Empower parents to be even more involved in their children’s education.

4- Build a robust but constructive relationship between parents and school.

5- Increase the quality, speed and responsiveness of the communications.

6- Ensure an inclusive attitude to encourage a wider PTA participation.

Our cultural diversity is our strength and brings a wide range of experiences and expectations. The challenge is to build the competencies to bridge the individual preferences with the needs of the whole community.

We have an active PTA. Over 300 volunteers (35 nationalities) and dozens of project leaders deliver popular activities and events: Welcome Party, Christmas Fair, I.W. food courts, Gala, Halloween, Easter festival, Book Fairs, MOMs, Workshops, Year group support, Clubs (Book, Hiking, Cooking), Uniform and Bake Sales, Volunteer dinners, Ladies Nights, Knight Out, FB pages, Newsletters, (and COVID delayed Spring Festival and Quiz Night).

Through these community building activities and support of our generous sponsors, we raised funds to invest in the needs of the school and contribute to the charities that could support our students’ broader education needs.

Leading the PTA is a team sport needing collaborative people who take responsibility. The PTA committee decided the policies and helped project leaders in their planning, resourcing, set up, event management and take down. We discovered so many talented people, who made things happen.

So a big thank you to:

PTA committee(s): Richard, Ben, Chris, Katherine, Carina, Akanksha, Alexandra, Raffaella, Elif, Niamh.

Clubs, events and year rep. leaders: Monica, Sheida, Sonia, Barbara, Nermin, Szilvia, Aikku, Zsanett, Sophia, Ed, Caren, Akanksha, Lydia, Elke, Katarina, Rita, Edith, Julia, Inge, Hee-Jeong, Miki, Szofia, Sarah, Ildiko, Anka, Craig, Pooja, Monika, Donni, Heather, Peter, and Dawn.

We had so many victims (I mean volunteers), so sorry if I forgot someone.

Then came the virus and the Virtual School Experience, bringing unprecedented challenges for everyone. Uncertainties heightened emotions and created the potential for division. Against the odds, we stayed focused on the students’ needs and as the link between parents and the school, we helped the community navigate through the fog.

Last year we introduced the Power Of Our Positivity awards, given for outstanding contributions to PTA. This year we shared the POOP award with the whole community, a just reward for the impressive way we came together to face the challenges.

I think our Principal has neatly summarised the contributions of the PTA team. In his 22 May 2020 newsletter, Richard wrote:

“The PTA have coordinated events and activities that have enriched the experience of our students and their families, have raised funds for our service learning projects and for charity, have accumulated money for in-school enhancements and throughout this have engaged the support of large numbers of parent volunteers. Alongside this, they have acted as a pivot point between school and homes, balancing views and maintaining stability and purpose.”

Another recent comment from an active member:

“I think the tone and atmosphere within our community has shifted under your leadership and this has been by design…conversations and discussions have become more constructive and respectful”.

Success builds confidence and failure builds character. Our experiences have given us confidence and a strong character to face future challenges.

I am proud of what we have achieved together, and invite you to step up, join the committee, become involved and improve on what has been achieved.

Finally, it has been a real pleasure to work with so many of you. Our BISB membership is transitory but our friendships and memories will last.

Thank you for your trust and the opportunity. I learnt a lot.

Mohsen Noohi
BISB PTA Chair

13th March

Dear PTA members

Coronavirus has dominated the news for a while. We are going through a very fast-moving and uncertain period and naturally have concerns.

Fortunately, the advice is becoming clearer as the understanding around this virus is becoming better.
We hear facts and rumours of actions being taken by other schools and organisations in and out of Hungary, which increases the stress as we wonder what should be next for our community. It is important to know that the reactions from different schools will be based on the situation and dynamics in the school, in the country and the directives of the health authorities.

I am happy that our school leadership is listening to the parents and also monitoring the recommendation from various health authorities around the world. Richard Dyer’s recent emails have given us clear guidelines and have answered many of our concerns.

The school has already implemented an increased hygiene protocol and cancelled various international events and large gatherings. Richard has also stated that the school is ready to take the appropriate next steps

As a PTA we are continuously considering our activities. We have recently cancelled the March MOM and we will delay our proposed Quiz Night planned for April to a later date.

By making sure we follow some common-sense simple steps, we can help reduce the risks. These steps are widely communicated in our community on Facebook, WhatsApp groups and in the school messages. They are also widely available on the various health authority websites. I know many of us follow them with diligence. For example, many people have stayed away from the school if they have recently visited or had visitors from high-risk regions.

This is our community.

We will stay alert and get through this together with our strong community spirit.

And now for some updates:

MOM MEETING – Our next MOM Meeting will be held on 1st April 2020. More details will be coming in the next few weeks
GALA - Mark Your Diaries for the 2021 BISB PTA Charity Gala! Fresh from a successful 2020 Gala, we have already booked our Gala for next year! Our 2021 BISB PTA Charity Gala will take place on the 1st May at the Budapest Marriott. Just Showband has confirmed availability and will return for another evening of fun, music, and dance.

Check out this year's photos from Peter Ronaszeki here.

In the meantime, we still have many unclaimed raffle prizes from this year's Gala. Please take a look at the updated raffle prize list below to see if you are a winner. Winners should contact Sophia Verykios at sverkios@hotmail.com to claim their prizes.

6th March

The PTA wishes to thank all of the parents, teachers, and staff, not to mention the many donors and sponsors who helped to make this year’s charity gala such a huge success. We raised nearly 4,000,000 HUF in funds that will be directed to supporting our charitable goals!  We also are proud to report that our principle beneficiary this year, the UNICEF Hungarian Commission, which supports children’s programs throughout Hungary, will receive 3,090,000 HUF from the proceeds of the auction.

Everyone agreed that this year’s gala was the most fun to date – great food, great gaming, great music and dancing to the phenomenal sounds of Just Showband. We had a record number of raffle prizes too, which means a record number of raffle prize winners! For those who were not able to claim their prizes at the gala, please check the list attached to see if you are a winner, and please contact Sophia Verkios at sverykios@hotmail.com to collect your prize.

raffle

Needless to say, our annual charity galas are made possible by the generosity of the donors and sponsors who so eagerly and consistently demonstrate their support for BISB, our community and our charitable goals. They are indispensable to our success. We are proud to display their logos in the gala programme booklet and on our community Facebook page. Please help us to say thank you to them by considering their products and services as your purchasing choices arise. We are also grateful to Her Majesty's Ambassador Iain Lindsay and Mrs Bridget Lindsay for their attendance as our Special Guests of Honour and to Ms Antonia Meszaros, the Executive Director of the UNICEF Hungarian Commission, for attending as our Guest Speaker.

26th February

We hope everyone had a fun, restful break and has returned from their travels safe and healthy. Given the number of other events occurring and there being no pressing matters to discuss, the PTA has chosen to cancel the March MOM gathering. We will continue to proceed with Gala this weekend and have our regularly scheduled club events like cooking and hiking club.

Upcoming Events

Cookery Club – On 5th March a group of Indian parents will showcase recipes from India. Please sign up in the BIStro if you have not done so already.

Book Fair – Do to delays in the delivery of the books, the book fair will be postponed from 6th March till 19th March, which is the same day as the Primary Pop-In.

Gala - The Great Gatsby Gala will be held at the Marriot Hotel this weekend on 29th February. It promises to be a fun event with dinner, music, casino, a raffle and an auction.

14th February

Upcoming PTA events:

Gala
Today is the last day to buy tickets for the Gatsby Leap Year Gala, the PTA's annual charity gala on 29th February in the Marriot hotel. This year our proceeds will go to UNICEF. Please join us for a great, festive evening – for a good cause.

Book Fair
The Book Fair will be held at school on 6th March. Children will have the opportunity to purchase books during the day and parents will have a chance to purchase books at the end of the day. Due to changes in supplier’s prices and delivery, the prices of the books will increase slightly for some titles.

Uniform recycling
We are looking for volunteers who would like to be responsible for recycling used uniforms which can no longer be worn, by transforming them into gym bags (and maybe other items). Mrs Hodges will help with instructions but we need team leaders and volunteers for this project. If interested, contact the core team.

Happy Valentine’s day and enjoy your winter break.

7th February

In our second MOM of the year we had an enlightening workshop with Anka Mate on how parents can help their children with emotional development. Change is one of the new constants in our life and the workshop helped discuss how we can help our children manage change by understanding boundaries, dealing with failures and understanding mistakes. We hope to have many more workshops with Anka in our future MOM’s.

SCHOOL UPDATES
Online Safety Presentation
Next week, Mr Jonathon Taylor, a UK based online safety expert will be visiting the school and working with all students and staff on how to be safe while online. On Tuesday 11th February Mr Taylor will hold a presentation for parents that will focus on how to keep our children safe online. The presentation will focus on behaviour to look out for and building awareness on how to monitor children while they are online. The presentation will be at 2.30pm in the Dining Room.

Book Fair
The Book Fair will be held at school on 6th March. Children will have the opportunity to purchase books during the day and parents will have a chance to purchase books at the end of the day. 17th January

We had our first MOM meeting of the year on Wednesday and it was a jam-packed session. Mr Richard Dyer updated the parents on the ISI inspection report that was released recently. The school is pleased to announce that BISB received the highest rating of ‘Excellent’ by the inspection team. The report has been sent to all parents by email and is also available on the school website so please do take a look at it and share with your children.

We also updated parents on our Christmas Fair last term. The fair had 45 vendors, 20+ sponsors, we sold 500+ tickets and about 1800 raffle tickets. As a reminder we still have some unclaimed raffle prizes; please look below to see if you are one of the winners. If the prizes remain unclaimed by 1st February, we will add them to the auction for our Gala Event on 29th February.

Organising the fair is a very big effort and we want to thank everyone who volunteered to help decorate, sell tickets, run events and clean up. Zsannette did a fantastic job leading the decorations and a special thanks to Aikku, Monica, Barbara and Carina who put in many hours planning and running around on the day of the event.

Our next big event is the Gala, which will be held on 29th February 2020. Since we are back in the 20’s why not celebrate the ’roaring 20’s’ by hosting a Gatsby themed event? The Gala will be held at the Marriott, there will be dinner, a live band, a Casino and an auction so plenty of fun to be had by all.

Ticket sales will begin on 27th January at drop off and pick up times. The price is 20,000HUF for parents and 15,000HUF for Staff. You are welcome to bring guests from outside the school community. The dress code is black tie, national dress or Gatsby-themed. When you sign up for tickets you can choose your meal preference and seating preferences. The tables seat 10 each and you can choose to book an entire table if you would like. We will also have some ‘ladies only’ tables set up. Finally for anyone who has a leap day birthday you can get a free ticket to the event.

Of course, none of this is possible without help from BISB volunteers, and the Gala team does need help to sell tickets before the event and also be at the reception during the event. We are also looking for sponsors for the Auction and wine donations for the wine draw. If you are interested in helping the first volunteer meeting will be held on Friday at 2.00pm in the Bistro.

8th November 2019

At our monthly MOM on 6th November 2019 Anka Máté, the school’s counsellor presented a workshop focusing on stress management for students and how parents can help reduce this stress. In her workshop, Anka discussed some of the various causes of stress in children, how we can identify the physical and emotional symptoms of stress and how we parents can help our children cope with stress both by modelling healthy behaviours that reduce the onset of stress and by sharing some stress management techniques.

In addition to the workshop, we had some updates from Mr Dyer and Mr Russell and the PTA gave an update on Term 1 PTA events.

Updates from school leadership:

  • The school is preparing for its first ISI Inspection next week and inspectors will be on school grounds interviewing students, teachers and staff. Parents can help by continuing to send children to school on-time, appropriately dressed, well-nourished and well-rested so they are able to learn and contribute. If there are any changes to student schedules or situation please keep the teachers informed so as to reduce any additional changes in their day.
  • Mr Russell would like to remind parents that if they needed to take their children out of a CCA could they please inform reception so that the teacher responsible for the club is made aware that the child will not attend.
  • The school is looking for any parent who can help with the gardening club next term.
  • Finally, Mr Russell will hold another meeting on Friday morning regarding parent volunteers for the Primary playground. The school is looking for parents to volunteer after school to monitor key points in the playground where children are at an additional risk. Parent volunteers are not responsible for supervising children. Children that play in the playground after school hours are still required to be supervised by their own parents.

Teacher Appreciation Day:  On 4th October the PTA provided doughnuts to all BISB teachers as a small token of our appreciation to our teachers for all of their hard work and dedication. About 150 doughnuts were delivered to the break room including some gluten free ones!

International Week: A big thank you to the many, many parents who contributed  and made International Week a success. The food court was held in the Atrium this year and the BIStro kindly provided special bowls and plates so we could reduce our use of paper products. As in prior years the food court was one of the most popular aspects of International Week.

Halloween: The Halloween party was hosted in the BIStro on 31st October and was attended by over 300 students and their parents. A haunted hallway, many spooky games, a pumpkin decorating contest, photo booth and of course treats ensured that everyone had a great time. This could not have been done without the help of the many parents who took time out to decorate the school and run the games. Thanks also go to the Secondary students who volunteered to help at the event for the Primary students.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest winners: We loved all the innovative ideas and detailed handiwork: hanging eyeballs, cartoon characters, dollhouse, pumpkin eating pumpkin and many colourful versions!  After counting all of the votes the top three winners are:

  1. Pumpkin No. 12 - with 49 votes!!!
  2. Pumpkin No. 20 - came second, and
  3. Pumpkin No 22 was the third most popular!

If you have not done so, please contact Szilvi at Szilvi.fovenyi@gmail.com or at +36 70 932 1157 to collect your prize.

PTA Halloween

Book Fair: The Book Fair will be held on 21st November on the same day as the Primary Pop-In. In case you have used books to donate to the sale, you can bring them directly to the book fair on that day.

Christmas Fair: Preparations have started for the Christmas Fair that will be held on 7th December. If you would like to be a sponsor for the raffle, vendor at the fair or volunteer to help set up the event, please contact aikku.javas@gmail.com We will need volunteers prior to the fair to help decorate the school and sell tickets. We will also need several volunteers on the day of the fair to sell vouchers and run some of the tables.

Gala: The Gala will be held on 29th February 2020. Because the Gala is earlier than usual, we will need to start preparing in December. The Gala is organised by Sophia and Ed and they will be reaching out later in the term for parent volunteers.

Please don’t forget to check the latest PTA information on our community PTA bulletin board in the BIStro and follow our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/BISB.PTA/   where you can find lots of news and useful information.

31st October 2019

We hope everyone had a restful half term break and is ready for a busy second half of term.

Halloween: On Thursday 31st October the PTA is organising a Halloween party for Primary and Early Years students and their parents. 4th October 2019

It was a packed agenda at this weeks’ MOM meeting held on Wednesday 2nd October 2019. The main focus of the meeting was to discuss the upcoming ISI inspection with the school Principal, Richard Dyer. ISI is a UK government approved independent inspectorate for independent schools, on behalf of the Department for Education. It is also an approved independent inspectorate of British Schools Overseas (BSO). BISB has engaged ISI to conduct a BSO compliance and Educational Quality Inspection. Once completed, the inspection report will be published in full to parents. The school has decided to bring in the inspectors to help it find their blind spots and provide some guidance on where the school can make improvements. The first part took place in September and the second part will take place 12th-15th November 2019. As a part of the inspection process, parents should have already received an email with a link to the inspectorate's confidential parent questionnaire. The questionnaire will close at 6pm on 7th October and the school hopes to have a very high response rate.

If you did not receive the email please contact the school on office@bisb.hu and ask for the link.

In addition to the inspection, the PTA gave an update on all of the events being hosted in the first term.

International Week: Various planning meetings held including the school staff. Thirty three countries will present national dishes. The kitchen will also reflect the tastes of the different countries in the soup and main courses they will offer during the week.

Halloween: Plans are complete and tickets sales will start soon. Bake sales will also be announced. Many parents and Secondary students have volunteered but we still need more in some areas such as ticket sales, bake sales, decoration, and games coordination. Secondary student volunteers will participate during the party supported by adult volunteers.

Christmas Fair: Christmas Fair progress is being made with a plan similar to last year’s activities. We are looking for more sponsors and vendors. So, if you have friends or family in companies, large or small, who can provide products or services we can put into our prize draws we would very much welcome that. A volunteer briefing day has been arranged for early November.

Book Fair: We are facing challenges on delivery as our shipping company have gone bankrupt. We are investigating new alternatives.

Secondary School event: PTA is working with the school and senior students to facilitate an event specifically for Secondary students. This will be designed and led by the students and supported by the PTA.

Teachers Appreciation Day: Saturday is TAD. PTA has arranged doughnuts for the teachers’ coffee break on Friday to thank our enthusiastic teachers.

Please don’t forget to check the latest PTA information on our community PTA bulletin board in the BIStro and follow our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/BISB.PTA/   where you can find lots of news and useful information.

6th September

Thank you to all the parents who attended our first Monthly Open Meeting (MOM) of the school year. We had a fantastic attendance and it was wonderful to see so many new faces among the parents.

Our Principal, Richard Dyer, provided updates on the many changes happening around school, including the construction work (which will hopefully be wrapped up in the October timeframe), improvements to school facilities like the flooring in the Primary building and updated science labs, new staffing and of course the amazing new playground along with the London bus.

He also discussed the BISB vision, which is Empowering Students in a Sustainable School and shared the actions being taken by the school to help achieve this. As PTA Chair, Mohsen shared the PTA Role and Mission and how this supports the BISB vision of empowering our children.

PTA 1

In line with the PTA objective to equip parents to support our children when they face challenges like exam stress, peer pressure etc., the PTA will initiate a number of workshops with Anka Máté, the school’s clinical and educational psychologist. Anka joined today’s meeting and shared some of the topics to be discussed at future MOM’s. More details will be provided as the workshops are finalised.

The PTA also discussed some of the events we will be hosting during the year, who will be leading them and shared information on the various PTA clubs and how to join them. The main events for the first term are International week, the Book Fair and the Christmas Fair. You will hear more details in the upcoming weeks as planning for these events begins.

We are always looking for parents to help with these events and if you have not had a chance to sign up as a general volunteer or for specific events, please feel free to contact the PTA members listed below.  This list will also be available on the bulletin board in the BIStro.

PTA 2

We also wanted to thank Monica, Elke and all of the parents that helped in putting together the used uniform sale last week. We will be having more sales at various points during the year.

Upcoming Events

We hope you can join us on Friday 13th September from 6.00-9.00pm for the welcome event for parents, teachers and staff.  An email inviting you to let us know of your attendance was sent out earlier this week and if you can complete that for us, it will be very helpful for our planning.

14th June

On 5th June, we held the last Monthly Open Meeting (MOM) of the school year. In this meeting, we officially welcomed the new PTA officers on-board and thanked the existing PTA team for their commitment and hard work throughout the year. As core committee officers, Niamh, Raffaella and Elif were instrumental in ensuring the success of our many events during the last academic year.

PTA Ladies

Bidding Farewell to our current PTA Officers: Niamh, Raefella and Elif.

With only 8 school days left before the end of the current academic year, the new team has already started planning events for the 2019-2020 school year. Through our various events and meetings, the PTA will continue to build a healthy community spirit and contribute to the success of BISB in providing a broad education for our children. Going forward we will plan even more inclusive activities to deliver on the needs of all members of our community with a special focus on our children.

We hope to see you at next year’s events, the first of which will be our first Monthly Open Meeting tentatively scheduled for 4th September and our Welcome Social being held for all parents during the evening of 13th September.

As you are all very much aware, this week saw us hold the Forum with the SLT (Senior Leadership Team). This took the form of a presentation under the headlines of British International Education and Assessment, with time included for questions during and at the end of the presentation. Over the past few months we have been collecting questions and topics from parents, and then working with the SLT to focus a discussion under these key headings. We endeavoured to use this opportunity to create a better understanding of the school policies, as well as the topics that are unclear for some parents. There will be future open meetings with more coverage of the topics. Over 90 people attended the meeting, showing an outstanding engagement on the parent side and a good indicator for future open meetings!  Many thanks to Richard, Chris and Ben for making themselves available together for this April MOM.

Don’t forget you still have the chance to put yourself forward for one of the PTA Committee positions for the next school year! The open positions are those of the four officers of the PTA core committee: Chair; Vice Chair; Treasurer and Secretary. If you are interested, please fill in the nomination form. The completed form must then be sent via email to pta@bisb.hu, or you can hand it in to school Reception before 10th April.

For those of you that have your Gala Dinner tickets on Saturday – enjoy!

Please remember to let us know about the kind of feedback you wish to receive at our open meetings. We welcome all feedback and ideas. Please use our dedicated PTA email address for any suggestions. pta@bisb.hu
