What’s Happening in High School English at the moment?

In Grade 8 English Language and Literature classes, students have been considering how poets express their ideas and messages to connect with their audience.  Currently, students have been exploring how two poets use metaphor to explain their thoughts and feelings about the importance of our identities and cultures.  As a class, we all brought food from our home countries to illustrate the importance of food in bringing cultures together.  From our investigation thus far, students have made informed judgements about the importance of our culture when we consider our own identity in the world.

Meanwhile the Grade 8 Language Acquisition are exploring the importance of health and fitness.  They are presently using imperatives to instruct others in how their favourite sport is played.  They will move into exploring how sport can both unify and divide communities and countries.  Reading is reflected on weekly in a journal and the students are very actively encouraged to read more.

In Grade 9 English Language and Literature classes, students have been exploring short stories and how writers often convey different perspectives on key events.  In particular, we have been looking closely at how writers use symbolism to present both a child’s and an adult’s point of view of events.  Students have become more aware of how language devices can be used in differing ways to show different points of view.

Grades 9 and 10 English Language Acquisition students have been reviewing the IB Learner Attributes and considering their own learning skills.  We have explored how we research, inquire, review, communicate and collaborate with one another to aid our learning processes.  Currently, students are researching the left versus the right side brain theory and presenting their findings later this week.

The Grade 10 Language and Literature Class are exploring modern poetry and developing their skills in writing analytical commentaries.  Our focus will be poems by Carol Ann Duffy and Simon Armitage – poems written to reflect the communities the poets originated from, and ideas that the students can relate to.  Our particular focus is the Audience and Purpose of poems and texts.

As our Grade 11 Diploma students gain a better understanding of the requirements of IBDP, CAS, TOK they are showing a very positive and open-minded approach to what lies ahead.  Their attitude has been fantastic. The Language and Literature students will be looking both at literature, in particular a great book by Maya Angelou called ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’, and language, in their first Unit on Gender and Language.

The Language B students are exploring identity and how people show their identity.  While improving their reading, listening and speaking skills they will explore the benefits and problems with identity, and nationalism vs globalisation.

Our IB Diploma Grade 12 students have begun Part 2 of their English Language and Literature course.  Currently, we are looking at how language is used in mass communication.  Last week, students investigate how bias can be used subtly in texts to convey an argument or view point.  Soon, the class will be starting their literature study of ‘A Doll’s House’ by Henrik Ibsen.

CAS Grade 11

A huge thank you to all the parents and students who supported the Grade 11 Bake Sale.  We raised over Y3500. That money will be used to buy food and equipment for the Orphans In Tagong when we leave in 2 weeks time.  Another amazing effort by the Leman community.  Great to give to others while our children enjoy some good home baked products.

The grade 11 students will continue to collect any warm items that you no longer require - hoodies, blankets, gloves, hats, scarves and so on.  We even have 3 Grade 11 students knitting their own scarves to give to the orphans. What an effort.  Please send your warm donations in with your child and a grade 11 student will collect them from their home room.
