Almost two years ago, at our Rayyan campus, we introduced a new concept in bilingual education. We started a Year 2 bilingual class and this has now grown to a Year2 and Year 3 class. Our world is becoming increasingly smaller as parents move from one country to the next and multilingualism is increasingly significantly in the classroom today. Nord Anglia Education is proud to provide high quality teaching and learning and to encourage students to be ambitious, focussing on the essential skills to succeed in every aspect of their education. Every student is encouraged to love learning and to try something new.
From an early stage of the opening of the programme, observations, data and surveys showed great benefits for the student’s learning and improved communication between family and school. We found that our children’s progress was accelerated through increased critical thinking and transference of skills. Bilingualism is challenging for both students and for the school but it also influences the way in which students experience language, culture and learning. We want our students to have the skills to face the challenges of 21st century learning and be able apply them in an international context.
The model consists of two teachers; one native English speaker and one native French speaker. The children are taught English and French as stand-alone languages to develop knowledge and skills in both languages. Maths and the International Primary Curriculum, which covers all other subjects areas linked together by a common theme, are taught in both languages. Lessons are carefully timetabled to enable subject content and learning in both languages and the teachers switch between the two classes.
This has been highly successful and the feedback from parents is extremely positive. Significant research and many articles have been written on bilingual education and brain development. Mindset recently wrote an article which can be found here. Please contact Rayyan campus for further information or contact firstname.lastname@example.org">email@example.com or call 4034 9702.
